I thought it was too expensive. Though this was almost as expensive, but we got to have a couple of days in London too. I love London (in small doses).

Cool. cool ...if you're sure that's your thing.

I actually studied astronomy/psysics some years before biology, and holy crap, it turned dull quickly. I still find astronomy fascinating, but I REALLY don't want to delve into the details again, with the extreme math and computer simulations ad nauseum. It just turned too abstract and distant.

Psysics is often considered the hardest (and therefore most impressive) of the sciences, due to its ability to predict and model reality to such a high degree. I personally find the unpredictability and complexity of life vastly more interesting than endless formulas describing predictable behaviours by dead particles.

Of course we're all different. I'm sure many students of psysics will speak as derisive of biology as I do of physics.

Particle physics, from the relative small amount I've read on the subject, and from a layman's perspective, does seem to be quite a lifeless subject on the face of it. Unfortunately the endless equations are a necessary evil, but the outcome is infinitely rewarding from what I can surmise! Cosmology is what really interests me since it really gets to grips with the fundamentals of existence: multi-dimensions, spacetime, particles in two places at once, special and general relativity, Higgs fields, and particularly the "cosmic landscape" of string/M theory as just a few examples of some of the Big Ideas in science that leave me in complete and utter awe.

As much as I am an appreciator of all sciences (though far from an expert in any field), cosmology is where my heart's at. (Newton is generally regarded the physicist's Darwin, but I would personally put my money on Einstein. From what I've read about the two, I much prefer Einstein. wink)

The more you learn about this world, the more you realise that, depending on whether He/She/It exists, God truly is a scientist!

  1. Ever since I "upgraded" to AVG 9.0 my PC is just so slow. I'm not sure whether it's the constant "live" monitoring of traffic/sites that's slowing it down or whether it's something called the AVG Cache Server Process (avgchsvx.exe) - this seems to be a bit of a hog on the system and there may be a bug that needs fixing.

I've got a feeling that my old PC (5-6 years old) is being left behind with all these newer versions.

Can't afford one at the moment. Maybe I need to find an alternate to AVG that isn't so much of a drain on my system since 9.0 rolled out.

    sad

I found the AVG to do a similiar thing to another computer. I still use Norton Antivirus and have never had a worm, virus, or problem with it. Just my experience.

Norton is a virus on its own.

Alan, you might want to try AVAST! Home edition or Avira Antivirus home edition or even Comodo Internet Security, all free, all working great, all from filehippo.com

Reason I stopped using Norton is that it stopped offering a user interface whenever something it thought might be a virus or worm was found: it just deleted everything it thought was a virus.
I would have lost a LOT of work and proprietary programs through that (thank god for backups).

And the wonderful thing is that the lovely people at Norton do not consider this a bug, but rather a FEATURE!
"Yes sir, we cannot trust our customers to do the right thing when we tell them a virus is found, so we don't tell them anything but just clean out what we feel is proper."
    Ugh.

Big fan of AVAST! now too. It's a very light load on the operating system, even an older one.
I'm not too keen on its full on-demand scans (for one thing it completely stops whenever it finds something suspicious, which makes scans of large or multiple hard disks a veeeeeeeery long experience), but its on-access or background protection is just great!

There's a shitload other problems with Norton, more importantly that it slows the pc down at that level, even a light virus won't. I am glad you're enjoying Avast. If you're happy don't change it at all, but if you ever will, Avira or Comodo are the way to go, imo. Free, reliable and fast.

    Thanks, Demetris.

What's the best way to manage changing?

Should I download the file(s) of whichever version I choose, then isolate myself from the internet and then remove AVG, reboot and then install AVAST! or Avira? Then go for updates online?

Any experience of whether I should disable Zone Alarm when installing the AVAST!/Avira?

BTW, I dumped Norton years ago - I found it a huge drain on my PC's performance. And it took me ages to get rid of it. And needed a special program to fully unistall it. In saying that, I was looking through my start-up list in Spybot the other day and found a couple of lines for Norton and it's LiveUpdate service that I had to manually delete!!

Why would you need to isolate yourself from the internet, Alan? confused

If it's the lack of protection you fear, any risk you effectively run is insanely exaggerated by people who make a lot of money from products based on fear (ahem. Mr. Norton, mister McAfee...).

Unless you frequently visit dodgy websites (.ru extensions, illegal ware sites, porn sites and the like) or unless you are hyperactive with peer-to-peer networks, you really don't need to worry about an hour's (or even a day's) lack of protection. Generally Windows' own firewall and security will deter the casual stroller (if there even IS any, which is highly unlikely!).

For that reason I am no longer running ZoneAlarm: next to a proper virus scanner, it really was overkill.

Anyway, what I'd do is simply download the files.
    Delete/uninstall AVG.
    Install AVAST!
(the installation already involves a preliminary scan of the systsem and running processes, so that's pretty secure).
    Run a full scan.

    Done.

Oh, and AVAST works fine with ZoneAlarm: http://en.kioskea.net/faq/sujet-464-myt … ompatible.
