    Oh well.

    Now listen to this:

LE VOYAGE EN BALLON | jean prodomidès

Awesomeness on a trip with a balloon, long before Giacchino's Up. A very uplifting waltz is the main theme, going through all kinds of variations, slow and fast paced, orchestral and small, playful or serious. Blaring trumpets, choir, guitars. Some tracks are stunning (Paris, Ballet de la Chemise Blanche). It also breaths that old charming music that you often associate with France.

It's the new release of the Cinémusique label.

Joep reviewed it here, bought it on his opinion and I completely agree

REINHOLD HEIL / JOHNNY KLIMEK / TOM TYKWER - Perfume: the story of a murderer

One of the best scores of the last 5 years.

Totally agree. It left me a great impression after watching the film, and it works wonders as an isolated listening experience. "Meeting Laura" is one of these tracks you can´t forget.

Just putting my thumbs up for this score, one of the best this decade IMO.

So glad you feel those sentiments dear Friend, i'd too stretch it up to a decade. That score is film music as it should be, in all aspects.

I think my whole point was that someone like Barry is very aware of his limitations and so works to accentuate his strengths within those limitations; but this score just attempts to do something the composers aren't capable of.

Agree, not only is the score a gorgeous stand alone experience but it fits the film absolutely perfectly, it is part of that film as much as the performances are, as Steven rightly suggested, it becomes an exotic aural scent.

Bah! You're exaggerating because you don't like the composers.

    MAGNOLIA | jon brion

Long tracks + rhythm + orchestra + occasional Thin Red Line moment + Jon Brion style (in So Now Then)
    =
one score I probably listened too the most this year (after BSG, Home and some others). I can listen to these long tracks forever.

NP:Spirit : Stallion of Cimarron (Zimmer)

I don't know if its a piece of crap or a really succesful blend of electronics and accustic elements.

The melodies are great for sure, though.

My sixth sense says me "Run Free" is one of these tracks that contains a lot of additional arrangers and composers that makes a track be not really Zimmerish, thought the clear influences from "Chariots race".

    Good track, anyway!

NP Hachiko: A Dog's Story Jan A.P. Kaczmarek

Another piano based score in the territory of Finding Neverland style without the "twee" part and add a more somber/melancholic tone to it.

Listening to John 'frigging' Debney's Passion. This is just genius.

Dedney, from his beginnings with small-time Disney scores, to his big break with Cutthroat Island, is an unappreciated composer. He does what he is asked - that what he is paid for. But, the man has so much talent beyond the means of film scoring. To be sure, he already had an audience with the pope. The point is that Debney deserves a lot more. I remember going mental back 1993 upon hearing Debneys score for Hocus Pocus. It truly was astonishing !

He's overdoing it with his friend pianist's improvisations. They're exciting during the first few minutes and then get tedious and heavy on CD.

So does Tyler Bates. And Djawadi. And many others. But they can't write proper music. Any other arguments? (except if i didn't understand your point correctly).

I'm listening to a John Williams concert that he conducted in September of 2007 with the NY Philharmonic. I'm currently listening to his "A Tribute To George Lucas And Steven Spielberg" arrangement. The piece begins with Jaws, segues brilliantly into Star Wars, then to Raiders and then to E.T. This sort of suite is a wonderful reminder why I got into film music in the first place. There is just so much geniune fun to be had with these scores that is very much missing from film music today. Just hearing the splash of cymbals and the fanfare of trumpets in the opening of Star Wars gives me goosebumps. I wonder that if I was a 10-11 year old now would I end up being a fan of film music since so much of it is uninspired, unmemorable, paint by numbers noise!

Agree. it's one of his most coherent and well devoloped scores. And a perfect constructed album.

The love theme is gorgeous, and Red Warrior powerful.

My favourite track is " To Know My enemy" , a cue wich anyone never mentions.

You know what my complaintments about this score are....Synth and looooong notes.

    NP:Dead Man's chest

Jack Sparrow and The Kraken reminds my most played tracks ever!

    The rest is mediocre.
