And McKenzie has written several that are that good. Durango, The Disappearance of Garcia Lorca, Blizzard. There's also a really nice compliation album called Con Passione you might be able to find. He writes beautiful stuff! I would put it in my top 3 for 2007 as well. Next to Atonement and Angel.

Indeed, i actually can't remember of a McKenzie score that was anything short but brilliant.

Listen to WOLFMAN by Elfman instead wink

    NP: Wolfman - Elfman

I like this sound of Elfman. I'm not a fan of his trying-too-hard-to-be-cool-electronics based scoring. This is very good. The string work reminds me of his replacement M:I score that I love. The brass stabs are a bit much after a while...

Anyway, I"m not a follower of Elfman's "non serious"/Burton work (outside of his first Batman score), I don't know if Sleepy Hollow is better than Wolfman. So can anyone care to enlighten me about Sleepy Hollow?

It works wonders in the film, i've seen it last night and damn, Elfman's surely a maestro of musical darkness. Sleepy Hollow is pretty similar, maybe more on the goth side of things. But both scores are superb and aid their respective films tremendously, which btw, Wolfman as a movie, is significantly inferior to Sleepy Hollow.

I have seen Sleepy Hollow and I wasn't really impressed by it. Though there were many elements that I enjoyed. Sadly, I didn't notice nor remember Elfman's score in the movie so I never seek out the soundtrack album...I might give it a second chance now.

The same can be said about Wolfman the movie. It has its moments, mainly when the staring duo is on screen, but it's very typical as a whole. And even the stellar cast at moments comes along as numb. But the score aids the atmosphere a lot, something on which the movie primarily resorts: ambiance and mood.

    PASSENGER 57 - STANLEY CLARKE

Good action score from non-film composer. Wow! Passenger 57 Theme just rocks (which is supposed to be opening title music in film). punk

I really like this one. For me, the 12-minute "Casino" was one of the most enjoyable tracks released in 2008. I'd certainly put it up there with James Peterson's "Ballet For Brawlers" from The Red Canvas (though the styles are VERY different.)

    Cheers, Mikael* (on both counts!)

NP: The Wolfman - Danny Elfman

I'm not a big fan of horror scores, nor am I familiar with Kilar's Dracula score. But I'm only about 6 tracks into this one and I'm already liking it a lot! The main werewolf theme with low piano and crafty cello work is supremely creepy and the string ostinatos supporting are fantastic as well. Elfman has done a great job of creating a dark, haunting atmosphere here. Listening to Gypsy Massacre now, one classic Elfman action track! Clear influences from Sleepy Hollow, and I like it a lot! First great score of the year, IMO.
  2. The Best of Lucasarts Original Soundtracks (some very talented videogame composers)

So who knows this one? Basically a small selection of the memorable music from the many Lucasarts videogame franchises are present on this album: the far west sound of Outlaws (Clint Bajakian), the carribean sound of the Monkey Island series (Michael Land), the jazzy Grim Fandango (Peter McConnell), or the mysterious The Dig (Michael Land). This is quite an interesting and varied set of music, that shows some of this works brilliantly outside of the games too. The Dig and Grim Fandango holds some of the most unique music composed for games. The always fun Monkey Island theme sticks in the head and the Morricone-influenced Outlaws is great as well, but too bad some of the best cues from the respective soundtracks are not here. But that doesn't mean this album isn't 100 % enjoyable.

Its second half, following the track of the storyline, after the piece "first transformation" (including) is even better. Big, bold, thematic, nasty and dark.

NP: The Water Horse: Legend Of The Deep - James Newton Howard

I haven't listened to this in a while but it's one of my favourites of 2007, along with his equally impressive I Am Legend. The brassy, percussive action cues which close the album are superb and although they sound extremely similar in style to the finale of King Kong, these are surprisingly more chaotic and powerful.

    cool

I love The Water Horse too! Great soundtrack. But now I played:

I love his early, quiet, thematic, melodic scores and this is one of them. Melancholic but nice with a small orchestra, and the occasional choir and harmonica.

In chronological order. (Thanks Erik & Steven! biggrin )

Though I don't have the 2 disc edition of Part I yet, sometimes I wonder which I love more, I or III?
The new themes, the western theme and Clara's theme, are great, mixed with the original theme very well.

And The Train cues are really punk

Jeff Bond mentioned the following at FSM concerning the Dracula score.

"In his DVD commentary Coppola said Kilar only wrote about 15 minutes of music for Dracula and that the score (and soundtrack album) had to be derived by combining and recombining the original pieces of music he recorded into different cues."

I'm a few seconds into this and already I'm impressed. But the Kilar Dracula influences are most definitely there! But it's great to hear Elfman in this mode again! The album features another brilliant recording by the best in the biz, Dennis Sands!

NP: Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief - Christophe Beck

Whoa, what a grand orchestral score! I never really expected this from Beck - no synths at all (at least seemed to me) and IMO, is by far the most coherent and well-structured orchestral material I've heard from him so far. Not anything groundbreaking but really a pleasure to listen to. Recommended.
