NP: Les Retrouvailles - Yann Tiersen

Amelie was the first time I notice Yann Tiersen work (which led me to Goodbye Lenin!). This album features some part of that style, and is nice to return to once in a while. The extra song/animation "Le Train" on the disc is also nice plus.

Interesting. I have his studio album L'ABSENTE (some tracks of which featured in AMELIE), which is superb. I've been meaning to check out more of his non-film music albums.
    I am extremely serious.

NP : NOT OF THIS EARTH - Joe Satriani

Brilliant, completely instrumental early album from one of the greatest guitarist in the world.

First up this morning were the Slavonic Dances of Dvorak. What a wonderful tribute to his country.

My new review is going to be the very first album that Morton Gould recorded in the controversial DYNAGROOVE technology from RCA. It includes music from Sibelius and Grieg.

Remember Tim you can go to the link and I've provided a direct download. There 320 and remastered nicely. The music is a template of what Norse material should sound like.

  1. Symphony No. 1 "Exile" by Alan Hovhaness

Very fine music. It sounds a great deal like Ben Hur, doesn't it?

  2. NP: My 114 song 80s synthpop and new wave playlist. Essentially a recreation of the mixed tapes I recorded during radio chart shows back then. Give me a dx7, d-50. Juno 60, Fairchild, Jupiter 8, an Oberheim drum synth, a vocoder (or two) ... anyday!

  4. NP:
    Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band (1967)
Magical Mystery Tour (1967) by John, Paul, George and Ringo (and George M.)

They made two such albums in one year, can you believe it?
In think in two hundret years from now these songs will be regarded as our times' "Wunderhorn".

You pose an interesting question Volker. What will be thought of in 200 years. We've discussed who was the greatest influential composer in the 20th century and I said Gershwin, specifically the Rhapsody in Blue.

Zdenek Fibich Symphonic Poems. He never achieved the status of Dvorak but had some interesting ideas and did write using melodic lines with a strong emphasis on orchestration.

  5. Zapping through TV channels I chanced upon a concert of Alan Parsons that took place in Madrid in 2004. While Parsons appears rather misplaced on stage - a big tapping bear wielding an inconsequential acoustic guitar - the music was great. The programme was dedicated to the memory of Eric Woolfson.

    Richard Hickox conducting the LSO

Being as this is in my top 5 all time works ( not just film, pop, jazz but all time works ) it is highly unlikely you won't see this mentioned again on some page of this thread.
