I recommend giving this a listen Tom. Gunning has always been a towering talent in my book and easily as good as that other fine Christopher, Gordon.

I'm familiar with his Wild Africa and Poirot. I'll give it a listen. Right now I'm enjoying Grieg's Symphonic Dances a wonderful work filled with melodies.

Tom, I also cannot recommend highly enough THE FILM MUSIC OF CHRISTOPHER GUNNING on the CHANDOS label, one of their very best releases IMO, it's the one I play more than any of their other releases except for the Vaughan Williams volumes.

  1. Symphnoy No. 19 (Vishnu) - Alan Hovhaness
Sevan Philharmonic conducted by the composer.

This is a bit of a challange as the patterns and harmonies are quite "modern". Very aptly my CD (Crysalis) shows the photography of a galaxy on the cover as this piece was used in Carl Sagan's original COSMOS.

    Volker
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.

I am always thankful for the original Cosmos LP as it introduced me to the excellence of Alan Hovhaness.

Nothing like a little Grieg to start the day and who better to conduct it than Morton Gould. The work is the Symphonic Dances, a work filled with melodies, colors, and effective use of the orchestra.

What a masterpiece this album is. Runs the gamut from sweet ballads to rock'n'roll to prog rock.

I was never a big fan of Elton John though I have always appreciated him. I'm familiar with all his early work ( my Brother is a big fan ), some of which I absolutely love.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is a superb album.

    NP : SYMPHONY # 11 : 'THE YEAR 1905' - Dmitri Shostakovitch

Brilliant! Some of the violent outbursts in this work can make even the most raucous film music seem puny by comparison.

This version is Mstislav Rostropovich and the LSO.

Shostakovich could be quite loud and dissonant at times.

Everytime I see someone mention Shosty, it reminds me how much I'd like to have Chris (TallGuy from FSM) here. He would also be perfect, atmosphere-wise, far more than he is over there. But alas, he can't seem to make the time for another forum.

  2. NP: Les Retrouvailles - Yann Tiersen

Amelie was the first time I notice Yann Tiersen work (which led me to Goodbye Lenin!). This album features some part of that style, and is nice to return to once in a while. The extra song/animation "Le Train" on the disc is also nice plus.
