I must admit I was surprised to see this on your recent purchases list Martijn. Did you really have no idea that it was utter crap?

I always liked the TV show theme. shame
Which wasn't even on the CD.

  1. NP: Caravans (1978) - Mike Batt

What a wonderful score this is. Not just the magic main theme but the entire score.
I never experianced it in context though. For whatever reason I never saw the film although it features Anthony Qinn and Christopher Lee.

    beer

NP: Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Michael McCann
This game score sort of plays like a darker and more techno-ish take on Daft Punk's TRON.

It's not bad. Quite good even, in places, especially when there's a strong burst of percussion coming through.
But overall it's way too gloomy and oppressive to really enjoy for over an hour.
Icarus - Main Theme is MASSIVELY epic track, though!

I completely understand why Thor likes this.
Me though, I dislike it even more than I thought I might.

I was hoping for a surprise: I have several eighties' synth scores that are REALLY good. But this is just insipid, generic semi-soft-pop synth burbling that those of us having to have lived through the decade associate with pretty much every single game show, commercial, cheap TV show or indeed kiddie cartoon at the time.
Not a single original or even interesting thought.
    Not one memorable musical moment.

    Ugh!

What are those really good synth scores?

I like the score too, but it's the definition of a "me-too" score. Icarus is pretty much TRON with a wailing vocal.

Just a couple that spring to mind:
Jan Hammer's work on Miami Vice has been excellent. If you find that double CD (good luck sad ) I heartily recommend it.
I think Tangerine Dream's The Keep is excellent: exceedingly moody and dark but very listenable.
Klaus Doldinger's Das Boot remains a favourite (fantastic theme, and the rest of the score is not bad either).
ANd of course I still think Fiedel's The Terminator is probably the best synth score ever...even if it's unlistenable away from the film. smile

Terminator & Terminator 2 are superb film scores but yeah, I can't listen away from the film. ( and I don't have them anyway )

I can! I love the first score outside of the film (probably because it's so bad it's good).

Well, bad as in good. It's not exactly Rachmaninov, but it has a certain charm.

  2. Christopher Young - Murder in the First

Why don't I listen to this beauty more often? And I HAVE to see the film.

I think I saw the film many , many years ago, but it's always been my favourite Young soundtrack.
    I am extremely serious.
  3. The religious sound, is it?

And the fact that it does subtly reference Barber's Adagio in its theme is beautiful.

I'd say a Georges Delerue influence too. I've not seen the film, is it any good?

  4. Heard good opinions about it.

There is some Delerue to it, yeah.

NP : FAREWELL TO THE KING - Basil Poledouris

After seeing Mr Southall's post at FB I just had to play this magnificent score.

    Martijn wrote
Allegedly Poledouris' most John Barry-esque score? Me, I can't hear it.

I'm very surprised, the Barryesque-ness in this score is neither subtle nor hidden. A lovely homage to one of Basil's favourite composers.
