    Aja - Steely Dan

A coolly textured and immaculately produced collection of sophisticated jazz-rock which showcases some of the best the 70s has to offer.

There is a world of unreleased material in the classical world. Looking at that list of Williams material, talking to McKay's son, Gordon, and others. I'm grateful for Naxos.

The bass trombone concerto by Gordon has never been released on CD. (And unless it's given another performance, I doubt it will be.)

NP : THE PLANETS - Gustav Holst

Another true masterpiece that I never ever tire of, this one is conducted by Charles Dutoit.

As I don't get out much - even during the holidays, I'm listening to an old Claudio Arrau recital on youtube, performing Beethoven's "Waldstein" sonata in 1983. It isn't as youthful as the excellent recording I have with Radu Lupu - naturally since the aging master pianist was 79 years old at the time. Theres something about his interpretation however that I really like. He seems to compromise the work's possibility for child like spontanity, for a less enthusiastic but honest vitality.

    NP: "Music" (John Miles)

My God, this is a beautiful song. Melancholic bliss! As I'm a fan of Alan Parsons, Supertramp etc., this is an obvious extension of that (Miles performed with APP many times), but I just now got around to truly discovering him. I'll be buying his albums soon!

'Music' was a massive UK hit in the 70's, I like the big keyboards / orchestral part of the song, reminds me of the big instrumental part of Richard Harris 'McCarther Park' or Mason Williams 'Classical Gas'.

Not my choice ( Mel's playing it ) but it is one of my favourite 'chill' albums and already deemed a classic.

NP - Beethoven's violin concerto with Joshua Bell, on youtube of course. Its amazing how many great live performances you'll find on youtube. Love the way the violin is introduced at the end of the exposition, with suspensful virtuosic runs on the dominant chord - simply breathtaking in the hands of a great performer like this. Also on youtube is Hilary Hahn's excellent performance of Korngold's exhilarating concerto. I'll listen to that next!

NP - Erich Wolfgang Korngold's violin concerto in D major. The second movement is a heart wrenching masterpiece which I had to listen to three times before moving on to the finale. Some say Korngold's themes are better scored in his films, but for me he is using them merely as expositions for a deeper, more vital exploration of musical texture and structure. A 20th century masterpiece, and one of the greatest (and perhaps most difficult?) concertos for the instrument.

Agree Mark with the Korngold statement. Korngold and Rozsa certainly made their mark on classical music. You should investigate the Rozsa Viola Concerto.

Listening to clips of the viola concerto on screenarchives, absolutely brilliant! Search youtube, and you'll find a video of the violist praising the work at a post concert dinner.
