Could you please name all the Bollywood films which are nominated for Oscars?

Why, does it have to be more than one?

Indeed. The film has nothing to do with Bollywood (aside from the homage you mention and the fact that it was shot in India).

No interested in getting involved here, but that made me laugh.

    No Country For Old Men

Saw this yesterday and while I think it's good, I wouldn't call it one of their best, it sure is moody and has all the right ingredients, but to me it felt like the Coen boys wanted to imitate Tarantino a little too much. I mean the movie doesn't even have a proper ending, that's like a Tarantino trademark, no? Sure it was gripping stuff, but I can't say I will watch it a lot, I prefer their witty hilarious comedies such as Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski and The Hudsucker Proxy. I think 'Burn After Reading' is more for me.

Considering I didn't have a clue what Tommy Lee Jones was on about at the end didn't help either.

Well, when some people quit playing smart-asses, they will admit what they know themselves already: Slumdog Millionaire is the new trendy thing this year, in the awards.

But do you not think that it may be because people think it's the best of the awards-season films? Just like No Country for Old Man was the "trendy thing" last year and The Departed the year before that and so on...

I don't think it's credible to say that it's only winning awards because people are suddenly in love with Bollywood, which is what you seem to be saying, and are awarding it just because of that and not because of anything to do with the film itself. (Even though it's not a Bollywood film.)

The Bollywood comment was to be Taken with a Grain of Salt. Of course the movie is trendy; Danny Boyle always was anyway, and the movie has that very element of foreign that intrigues many, either genuinely or - like in most cases, pseudo-trendy. And it happens almost every year with these awards' events, one time is this, another time is the Inaritu films and Santaolallisms, and so on.

I don't think anyone who follows the Hollywood / major awards' culture will actually argue against the dense presence of trends in these events, every year.

But its music, however, is heavily influenced by that culture although the film isn't on that degree, as you say. But that's not my point; my point is that in NO way, that music is the best film music has to offer this year. Let's be a bit serious for a moment here.

Now we agree. As much as I like the film (and wouldn´t mind it winning the oscar, although"The Reader" is my choice), the music is not the best film music this year. But we all know the music category has never, never been an important award for the american academy.

The music was so loud in the theater that I feel it took away from "Slumdog Millionare." My opinion it just went way over the top. While I thought it was a good film it certainly wasn't the best film I saw in 2008. Perhaps my ears are like Walt Kowalski (think so Erik?) and just can't handle the noise anymore. I felt the film had an excellent idea, well told, good photography, but way too predictable.

This Gun For Hire (1942) starring Veronica Lake, Robert Preston, and Alan Ladd in his first starring film was a **** noir picture. Lots of double crossing with excellent plot. Lake had a unique delivery that made her great for this type of picture including a voice for two swing numbers.

Saw a couple of films over the last two days...

    Taxi To The Dark Side

I liked this one better than Standard Operating Procedure, though I think the two make a good pair. Yet another depressing and disturbing film. No further comments necessary. sad

    Jagged Edge

An average thriller with Jeff Bridges being accused of killing his wife and Glenn Close defends him in court. Very predictable. Looks like John Barry thought it was boring too-- there's hardly anything that stands out from the score.

Barry's score is a rare foray into synths for him, apart from a pretty piano lead theme. Quite simply, I never play it.

    THE WRESTLER

A brutally realistic and powerful tale of human life with one of a time performance by Mickey Rourke. A shocking, heart-wrenching journey down one man's life with specifics that echoe to each and every one of us simultaneously, a story told in the way only Arronofsky knows how to carry out. Extremely recommended, as one of the most though-challenging and mature cinematic journeys you'll ever take.

Awesome martial arts movie , a must for the fans of the genre !
This must be Donnie Yen's best performance to date ...

I'm a fan and I didn't know of this film but it's directed by Wilson Yip (from SPL, Donnie Yen was spectacular in that one as well).

Yeah Thomas and I kind of dig the same stuff, though we don't always agree on the same things.

BTW I saw Ip Man and while it wasn't the action extravaganza I was expecting, it was good, just not mindblowing. Storywise, it's better than Dragon Tiger Gate, but I liked the fights a little more in that one. And SPL had some of the most insane fights, first with the blond guy who ambushes the other one, then revenge between Donnie and blondie (Wu Jing right), and to top it off, a kickass finale between Sammo Hung and Donnie Yen. OK Ip Man is something else entirely, it's more a kind of biopic, the story about Bruce Lee's mentor in his younger years, but I expected the fights to be more gut-wrenching, and less subdued, know what I mean? Or they keep all the bone-crunching body-pileups for the sequels. But I had a good time nonetheless.

Anyway if you can make it the 22nd you're more than welcome. Talk to ya later.
