Cripes! I spent two weeks on Phi Phi and even back then it was considered amongst the most touristy of the Islands, the hut I hired ( it was gorgeous, on high bamboo stilts with a hammock on the porch ) costs £1.50 a night and that was really expensive by the standards of Samui and Phangan, it was right on that strip that got completely washed away by the 2004 tsunami
Different times indeed. I remember stumbling over bungalows that charged $200 a night at the far side of the island, although we mostly stayed in the small inns slightly at the edge of the town, which were about $50 a night, one of the cheapest we found.I am extremely serious. -

Big difference indeed!
I think the main difference between my time there and now is that it was a backpackers paradise back then with a large "hippy" presense, it was known as a "travellers" destination whereas it's now become a "tourist" destination. On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

True.
However, when we were there, we heard that there were other islands nearby that had retained much of the backpacker feel. Koh Lanta, for example.I am extremely serious. -

I've heard that too. THE BEACH gets it spot on, that continual quest of travellers to find the next unspoilt paradise.
p.s. I stayed in a really awful backpackers on the Koh-San Road and that room ( complete with wet floors and faulty electrical facilities ) where Robert Carlyle kills himself was a near exact replica of one I stayed in.

I finally posted pictures of Úbeda (I didn't have my picnic, but I had an apple next to an olive tree!)
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set … amp;type=1
And also from our road trip with a couple of other friends through a not so often visited region of Spain (at least by foreigners). It was really cool. Especially good to learn Spanish, because it was so off the beaten track, that English was even less frequently used then elsewhere. We had some problems with ordering food in the beginning of the week, but at the end we almost knew what and how to order without awkward situations... As for the cities, I was completely in love with Albarracín! Just fantastic. We had a really good time, and a fair share of climbing. None of these towns are flat! A shower is useless.

Thanks! The towns were really cool. When we were up on the walls of Albarracín, it was storming and thundering behind the gorges of the city. We could see the lighting in the distance. When we returned at night, the bad weather had moved around to the other side of the gorges. The mountains around Albarracín seemed to push it back. Great effect, because the lightning was really furious.Kazoo -

A bit of drama as a friend of mine and I returned from the most excellent visit at our summer house in Denmark.
700 meters from the ferry, the car broke down (on a darkened car bridge)! We tried to call the service, but that's not easy when you're in a different country. With just 15 minutes to go before departure (you usually have to be there 60 minutes in advance), a friendly Dane drove up and offered to tow us onboard, with a tiny rope that we had to tie three times across. We came on last, with the trucks on the lower deck. Once in Norway, we were driven on a cartowing service (on the back shelf of a truck, whatever that's called in English) to the nearest hotel, where we had to spend the the remainder of the night and take a rental car to Oslo today!
Quite embarassing when you're driving a 2-ton Toyota Lexus Hybrid, their top model!
Anyways...a bit of everyday drama right there.

Starting tonight at midnight, Iceland will be my home for the next three weeks! Tent, hostels and farms, all will be tried out. We have a small Suzuki Jimney 4x4 to travel around. Fjords, puffins, volcanoes, glaciers, rain, wind, storm, rivers, sun, ice, hills, mountains and lots of hot pools!
After that, I surely will be in a state like Iceland some years ago: bankrupt. So after this biggest trip so far, a sabbatical year is in order.
See you all in three weeks and keep it safe here! Alan and Thomas, I hope you can continue your great set of reviews.

Sounds fantastic! I've long wanted to go to Iceland, but my longtime travelling companion has never been too hot on it. He seems to prefer warm places with sandy beaches. The night life in Reykjavik is supposed to be very good...please report back if you get a taste of it (although it seems your trip is your usual 'explore nature off the beaten tourist track'-type thing that you do so well).
Have a great one, Bregt!I am extremely serious. -

One could argue that Iceland did indeed send us back the money that went up in smoke, last year in May. In their offence, it was never agreed upon in what form it should have been returned.
Could it be a misunderstanding?Kazoo -

We'll see Reykjavik for just one night (and this night, but perhaps too tired of the trip to join the party goers). Akureyri apparently also boosts a night life, not as famous, but as the biggest town in the North, it appears to have a good reputation.
But yes, we'll travel and see what brings us. Not sure if we will do much off the beaten, it's such a vast country and the "tourist" places seems to be all worth it so much.Kazoo -
