Oops. Well, that's an embarrassing rubbing in the face of a French-speaking native!
I guess I brought it on myself though!
Eh, I'm gonna have to play the cultural card, seeing that I'm French Canadian and we really don't use that word a whole lot (we have our own very colourful array of slang, believe me) so I guess the spelling kinda lapsed in my brain. Thanks for the reminder though!''The mandate, as well as the benefit, of responsibility is the ability to tell when one can afford to be irresponsible.'' - Me -

Quantum Of Solace
Let's get this out the way now. This is a good movie, but not a very good Bond movie. It's not a poor diluted movie like Indy 4, but it doesn't go up that well after Casino Royale.
The whole follow-on thing is a blessing and a curse. While it allows it to hit the ground running, this combined with the short running time makes it feel very rushed. The plot is rather poor - it sets itself out within the first 15 minutes or so, and doesn't really go anywhere. The new characters aren't set out that well either, with very little or no backstory whatsoever (buy my God, Olga Kurylenko is EXTREMELY hot!)
The action scenes are good, but there are too many and they are all too short. It would have worked better if, like Casino Royale, it had a couple of big set pieces and then several smaller ones. Instead, you get a car chase, a foot chase, a fist fight, a very short bike chase, a boat chase, a gunfight, a plane chase, another fist fight and then a confused and quite dissapointing ending. None lasting more than a couple of minutes.
Art and location-wise - it takes a lot of risks. On too many occasions it goes out of the comfort zone. In some cases it works (let's just say the track "Oil Fields" is a lot more sinister than it sounds), but in others it doesn't (the opening titles, the new MI6 interior).
Music wise - and now I know why we have a few 30 second tracks - 95% of the score is on the CD. There are a couple of 30 second suspense cues missing, a re-recording of the Bond theme from the end of Casino Royale, and quite an interesting end credits piece written by Arnold called "Crawl, End Crawl".
It certainly doesn't live up to the hype, but then again it is still one of the better films this year. While it tries to be too dramatic in places, and plot-wise it is quite a mess, it's still enjoyable. Think of it as a more-violent Brosnan film.

Yes. He has his uses. When I am dominating Earth from my space platform he will create an inter-dimensional time vortex through which I shall become dictator of all existence past, present and future.

I'll see it again this week. Casino Royale wanted to be different and it succeeded. This tries to take that further but fails. Don't get me wrong - compared to the Brosnan-era, this is still way better! But it's also not much fun.
I've just been reading some other reviews (I always do after seeing a film for some reason!), and there's one thing that's stuck with me. Nothing in this film defines Bond as Bond. He's just another hard-ass. No one liners, no proper Bond girls, no vodka martinis, not a single gadget (except maybe a phone), and the gun barrel as the ending of the movie? Bad choice of directer imo. Bring back Campbell for a third time ANY DAY. -

Not to detract from Anthony's points of course, but I'm about to go see it now and I hope I have a more positive opinion of it. Anthony's review has made me wary though. -

It's a good thriller, but it's missing too many ingredients that make it a Bond film - most notably - fun. -

Just got back from watching it, and although I see your points, I'm glad it's gone in this direction. If you want camp Bond, go watch the old movies. If you want modern Bond, watch Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace. I want modern Bond, and I really like what they've done with the character and overall feel of the movies. It's a very Bourne-esque approach, and personally I think that's a good thing.
My thoughts on Quantum of Solace? Love it. (And I'm now 100% in love with Camille.

I disagree with you. Several years ago, Doug Liman decided to take 007 and make it more modern and violent, in the form of Bourne. Several years later, they decide to take 007 and re-hash Bourne. Chase accross the rooftops? Fist fight with a guy in a small apartment? Trailing someone on a motorbike? Remind you of a certain film that came out last year?
I don't want camp Bond as that's stupid, but I still want it to be able to identify itself as a Bond film.
Casino Royale is a modern Bond, but it's still got those references that make it a Bond film, and they were ALL missing from QOS. No proper Bond girl (CR has Solange), no gunbarrel (why right at the end? I thought he "was" Bond at the end of CR?), no vodkatinis (CR had one...), no one liners (CR had them), and most importantly, NO FUN. QOS isn't necessarily a bad film, but it's not one I'd watch if I was after a good time. Rather than being Bond, Daniel Craig is just another hard-ass in this one. He could be anyone for all I care. -

Who said i won't watch it? But i generally find myself taking into account the views coming from certain people who i know they can view things absolutely neutrally, despite the fact that they might adore one's previous work. Anthony, as far as i am concerned and although we don't always agree, has proven it many times so far as well as other members of this board whose opinion i value highly because of this very objectivity.Love Maintitles. Brad Anderson's (The Machinist) TransSiberian very clever and gripping old-fashioned thriller. The claustrophobic atmosphere, the icy, cold tone with the gray and white snow covering everything, the excellent performances esp. by the lead and Ben Kingsley, the feeling of solitude, isolation and agony, that's real winner. Very impressed.

So basically my opinion is less worthy than Anthony's?
I'm perfectly adept at watching things 'neutrally', I just happen to think Quantum of Solace is a very fine action film and I'm glad that this is the direction the Bond films are going. It's so much more interesting than the Brosnan era. Me Anthony simply want different things from our Bond movies; I've got what I want, Anthony hasn't. Simple.

Prince of Darkness (John Carpenter)
Re watched it after so many years and the effect still stands firm in this day and age
Man, Carpenter can build a mood so slowly it scares the living shit out of me, it is like a zombie movie where it goes slow but for that it creates tension
Not one of his best, but damn effective and the same can be said of the score (love the choral effects though) and the story is also interesting
Bring this director back (apart from Ghosts from Mars
)

PoD is probably one of the scariest movies if you´re into religion-themed stuff. I remember quite fondly my first time watching it when it came out on video way back then. Our usual bunch of friends was sitting in the dark and watching it, the tension was hanging in the room like a fog, when suddenly, out of nowhere, the two cats of our friend started hunting each other with inhuman shrieks. One ran under the seats, the pursuer took the high road! She hit three of us with her claws, and the room was full of screaming boys who got the shit scared out of them! -

Roque told us in Úbeda that his schedule was too busy with other projects so he couldn´t be as involved in the project as the director would have wanted. So he finally had to leave the movie.Anything with an orchestra or with a choir....at some point will reach you -
