    Classical Rock Classics - The Royal Symphony Orchestra

    An extremely cheesy title for oddly un-cheesy arrangements of well known pop and rock classics.
    Yeah, it's old hat (seems like the early seventies every orchestra was getting into that hype. Well. It paid the bills, I guess), but this is handds-down the best collection I have ever heard (and shame I've heard a lot shame ).

    The -almost uniformly very clever- arrangements for Nights In White Satin, A Whiter Shade Of Pale or Baker Street are incredibly moving, and it's absolutely great to hear Jeff Wayne's The Eve Of The War with full symphonic orchestra.

    ANyway, definitely not everyone's cup of tea, I would say, but I am loving this.

    That 'sounds' more like it Martijn. I presume ( am very sure actually ) that you were referring to the cheesy LSO 'Rock' albums which had incredibly variable results from very good to darn right sickeningly bad.

    Have you ever heard Jaz Colenman's DOORS Concerto?

    Yeah, my mistake. It's the 1990 LSO set.
    For some reason I got them mixed up with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to create the non-existent Royal Symphony Orchestra. dizzy

    No, but then it wouldn't mean much to me as I know very little from The Doors (never was much of a fan).

    I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend The Doors Concerto but it is pretty good and is a serious attempt at 'classical rock', it also features Nigel Kennedy on violin.

    As I've said many times before, the "LSO plays Classic Rock" albums are an important of my musical upbringing. I don't think I would have been interested in film music or even classical music if it weren't for those. They really familiarized me with an orchestral idiom (in addition to the orchestral elements on prog rock albums like Pink Floyd's THE WALL or ELP's WORKS or APP's TALES OF MYSTERY AND IMAGINATION). However, today I find them utterly cheesy, esp. that whole pop beat thingie.

    But I have very fond of memories of that exact album you listened to, Martijn.

    To me one of the best albums ever. The album of my teenage years , which shaped part of my charaster and the way I look at the world.

    Same here. Fond nostalgic memories of that album (and everything that happend at the time of the release). I was 14 at the time (1991) and that's an "active" time for many reasons.

    I should point out that when I saw them, nobody had heard of them before and they're name on the poster was in very small letters ( it was at Glastonbury Festival, known as Glastonbury CND festival back then and I was a punter, long before I ended up working there ).
