    NP : SYMPHONY # 7 'ANTARTICA' - Ralph Vaughan Williams



    Believe it or not I haven't played this for quite a time now having mostly played Rumon Gamba's recording of the actual film score. This one is a fine version by Andre Previn and the LSO.

    Something new for me is the Ballet Music of Sir Malcom Arnold. A new Chandos release 10550 it contains Homage to the Queen, Rinaldo and Armida, Concert Suite from Sweeny Todd, and Electra.

    Never heard that Tom? I'll look forward to hearing your view of it. I have all his symphonies and I particularly love Arnold's 'Dances' ( English, Irish, Cornish, Scottish ) work, have you heard this? I seriously recommend it.

    I do have them Tim although I admit to not playing them as much as I should. I of course have his film music material.

    I'm becoming quite intrigued with the Arnold ballet music. Apparently the first selection 'Homage to the Queen' carries quite a little bit of controversy. It had to do with music for Queen Elizabeth 11 in 1953.

    Tim you know darn well its Queen Elizabeth the 2nd and the coronation of 1953. Apparently Britten was involved also. I'd like to know the history.

    TESTIFY - PHIL COLLINS

    Hmmm... i read some of negative reviews about this album. However, i straightaway neglect those reviews and really appreciate this wonderful album by my favorite singer/musician/drummer Phil Collins. Its really good album. Phil Collins did a fantastic job. He just rocks.... punk

    NP: THE FOLKSONG RECITAL (Henry Purcell)

    It's often a bit awkward when opera stars sing traditionals, but this kinda works. Must be the Purcell arrangements, with simple guitar background instead of big orchestra. I especially love the Irish traditional "Down by the Sally Gardens", which is better known in Norway as an almost religious song ("Gje Meg Handa di, Gud" aka "Give Me Your Hand, God"). Yes, it's been "molested" by various questionable interpreters over the years, but it still holds up. "She Moved Through the Fair" is quite beautiful too.

    NP: THE FIREBIRD (Igor Stravinsky)

    A classic and programmatic piece that should appeal to film music fans. This is the Michael Tilson Thomas/San Fransisco SO version, which is fine, except that it's mixed with the RSNO syndrome, meaning too quiet when it's quiet and then too loud when it's loud.
