    NP: CLASSICAL CHRISTMAS (various)

    A compilation of classical Christmas music, both contemporary and modernistic as well as more traditional and romantic. Right now it's a track in the latter category, "Procession to Midnight Mass and Carols" by one of my favourite classical composers of all time, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
    I am extremely serious.

    Ugh...it's hard to get through this opera as it's not exactly Waters' shining hour, and it goes on for, like, 2 1/2 hours. But I have to play it to see if I can warm up to it. The intermittent orchestral bits are good, though.

    Well, this was the third time I gave it a shot. It's still not my cup of tea, but I can't give it up or sell it. It's Waters and Pink Floyd-related, after all. smile

    He was? I've seen a couple of RVW discussions there, but they have always been 100% positive.

    Perhaps I was being a bit sensitive especially with the comment about Copland (you can have him) and RVW and his 7th being his least favorite.

    Speaking of "classical" composers writing film music, I've always found it odd that, although I love Vaughan Williams, my least favourite piece of his would be the Sinfonia Antarctica, the only symphony based on his film music. To me it's way too long for the material. If he'd written something about 25 minutes duration...as it is, it wears out its welcome for me (the 4th movement, for instance, could have been dropped). Anyone else found that?

    Arnold is a fantastic composer, much appeciated by many film score fans though mostly at FSM, a shame he's not more appreciated here but you can't force people to like his music.
