NP : FIRST CIRCLE - Pat Metheny Group
The first track throws you right off kilter, it always conjours, to me, a badly out of tune small orchestra on some godforsaken South American railway station as some tin pot El Presidente is greeted disembarking from a train, all cheesy grin and big zapata moustache and medals
After this the album really kicks off and is brilliant! One of my all time favourites

NP: 'Sinnerman' (Nina Simone)
Wow. Wow. One of the greatest songs ever written. Such energy, verve, and great character in performance. When I hear things like this I realise I know so little of the great music on this planet.
It's a classic song, but it's kinda overused in film and TV over the years.
Fortunately I think I've missed most of the places where it's been used.A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

NP: The Carnival of the Animals - Saint-Saëns
Lately I've been playing this a lot. When I was little I couldn't understand what Leonard Bernstein saying in English at all (so the narration parts used to bore me), but now I can understand, well, mostly
Anyway, I always love this suite, with lots of fun and humor (lol for Pianists), but is very charming. My favorite movements are, Introduction & Royal March of the Lion (
), Wild Asses, Kangaroos (love the fun piano on these two), The Swan (just beautiful), and of course, fantastic Finale. I never get bored with it.Labels are for cans, not people. - Anthony Rapp -

It's one of those great works that is a great introduction to classical music, added to it is Prokofiev's Peter and The Wolf and Benjamin Britten's Young Person's Guide to The Orchestra. On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

He, he....are you sure that's the right emoticon for that piece? Shouldn't it be more like a smiley smoking a cigar and drinking a glass of fine red wine?I am extremely serious. -

NP: Dreams & Variation - Don Harper
I'm reposting this from another thread...
You know who Don Harper is, and his history with MV/RC... but you'll be surprised at the range he demonstrated in this album. His compositions are very "American" in approach; melodic, orchestral, acoustic, eclectic, colorful, introspective, but ultimately as diverse as the landscapes that he's painting. I got this album a couple years ago, right around the same time it came out on CDBaby and I really love it. I even wrote to him a couple time to express my affinity for this album.
In short, it's just lovely. -
