Raise the Roof for timpani and wind band is a work from Daugherty, composer of Metropolis, that was written about New York City. There are two themes which are cleverly woven together. One is from the brass and the other from the woodwinds with the timpani also playing the theme. Yet another piece of work seldom if ever performed. I like it

The Hound of Heaven from the pen of James Syler. Oh this could have been a soundtrack for a science fiction movie. This however is not the case. It is a story of a desperate soul who seeks and finds the balm of God's grace. Good work.

One thing Tim I can tell you for sure and that is the dynamic range on the Decca recording would make this one difficult to listen to in a car unless your model eliminates all road noise. Venus in parts is a mere whisper.

Balakirev Piano Concerto #2, which was completed by Lyapunov after Mily's death is an absorbing work.

  1. NP - The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me - Brand New

A rare foray into non-film music for me. But one with a connection to a TV show.

The song "You Won't Know" was used at the start of an episode of Stargate Universe.

  2. First music I'm playing for 2011!!

    The Nutcracker - Tchaikovsky

My all-time favorite classical composer doing what he does best: full-scale, majestic melody.

I can't say Tom, I would say there are great bass players.

    Charlie Mingus
    Jaco Pastorius
    Stanley Clarke
    Marcus Miller
    Victor Wooten

Those are the few that spring to mind.

Yeah, he's a great Tom, as I said, it was just the names that sprang to mind.

Someone like Martijn would have noticed I didn't mention Mark King, that's rectified now cool wink

Paul McCartney isn't exactly a slouch when it comes to fine bass playing now that I come to think on it.
