I was wondering if perhaps Gilles and yourself got some of your love for orchestral film music from hearing your dads records?

I always wondered that myself. It's odd that my brother and I are so much alike concerning hobbies. I only know that I never stopped listening to the 1812 overture in the car when I was very young. Which makes the transition to filmmusic a bit more believable wink
    waaaaaahhhhhhhh!!! Where's my nut? arrrghhhhhhh
  2. Well I have love for lots of different kinds of music, from easy pop tunes to progressive metal, music written in a broad variety of genres. Our father on the other hand... classical is the only real music to him. Don't get him started on some of the bands or artists that are generally loved by the public. It's all shit to him.

But there are some Shostakovich pieces, the more agressive, bombastic ones, when he puts them on, I'm always intruiged, that's the kind of classical music that's more to my liking.

don't forget the moment when he actually asked who wrote the music during the end credits of Stargate smile
It goes to show that even stellar filmmusic can surprise him wink

NP: SYMPHONY NO. 4 IN C (Dimitri Shostakovich)

Quite challenging and busy, with lots of dissonance and "sturm und drang". Not your usual Shostakovich.
    I am extremely serious.

NP: TRY ANYTHING ONCE (Alan Parsons)

First post-APP album from 1993-ish. Moody & sophisticated - both songs and instrumentals!

NP: Music for Chamber Orchestra (Edward Gregson)

Still on the first movement; seems quite calm and reflective but with an uneasy edge of chromaticism.

A slightly odd album by the synth wizard, but lovely and laidback.

Odd? How come? It might have had a slightly more orchestral sound to it and choir than usual, but it's still 100% vangelis. Love it.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

Yeah, more orchestral (like MYTHODEA) and also some odd meters and almost satirical "moods", like "Siren's Whispering". But I like it. smile

Up early this morning since I've got work in a few hours - I'm so very glad I didn't go too mad last night.

As a result I'm going to ease myself into the new day with a nice big mug of coffee and some chilled out sounds....

NP: SIMPLE THINGS - Zero 7

NP : SEASONS OF MY SOUL - Rumer

This girl has a beautiful voice, this is a very chilled album, very retro with a Dusty Springfield/Burt Bacharach vibe and that ain't no bad thing.

Very classy production, I like it a lot.

I'm on a real Vangelis binge, as you can tell. This 1990 studio album tries to capture much of the same ambiance as BLADE RUNNER does.

Well I'm still listening trying to make some sense of this Route 66. There are parts that have to do with Georgia O'Keefe, Sunset Strip, Black Rattle Snake, and a Time Machine. Right now I'm missing something for sure.

I gave up on the Daugherty for a time and have switched my focus to a new work for me called "Overture to a Symphony Concert" from Miklos Rozsa. This is like hearing new music from Rozsa for the first time. It's style is like many different films he composed for.
