NP : THE ORCHESTRAL TUBULAR BELLS - Mike Oldfield

The Royal Philharmonic conducted by sometime Oldfield collaborater David Bedford, this is a favourite of mine, a popular work that translates exceptionally well into a "classical" piece.

  1. I'm not a huge fan of that arrangement, because it quits some of my favourite instrumentation (piano, some guitar, Oldfield's drunken voice biggrin )

I love both but I must admit that nothing beats the original and that includes the more recent recording with John Cleese.

    It's of questionable legitimacy. wink

Highly reminiscent of the Orchestral Tubular Bells - the arrangements and orchestrations of David Bedford again! It's a travesty that it wasn't released as part of the recent 'Deluxe Edition'.

When it comes to Tubular Bells II, I have a single version of the spoken instrument names track (The Bell) with Billy Connolly as the MC (rather than Alan Rickman like on the album). A very good friend sent me that.

Hardhitting, sophisticated psytrance with lots of interesting textures!
    I am extremely serious.
  3. CALLING ALL DAWNS - CHRISTOPHER TIN

I've listened to it twice today. It's THAT brilliant! To support the composer to continue exploring his incredible talent, I've ordered three albums of this which I've just received in the mail. One I simply have to give to Thomas!

My first encounter with world music and it tastes great!

Thanks to Matt again for making me aware of this incredibly uplifting musical gem. punk

Samples are up at iTunes - it sounds like Glass' best opera for some time - BIG orchestral writing that is reminiscent of the rambunctious first movement of Symphony No.8.

It's worth it for the first movement alone, which showcases complex mixed-meter writing with full-bodied orchestrations.

I've already taken note and it's been a 'want' for some time now.

Has The Canyon ever been re-recorded? It's a fantastic piece but I hate the recording on the Robert Shaw album.

It's possible that I've never played it yet? At least it's something "new" to look forward to.
