  3. NP: Legend - Jerry Goldsmith

    This is one of Goldsmith's scores that I've always kept clear of because, from the clips at least, the orchestral score was very much murdered (to my ears at least) by some awful-sounding electronics.

    It's certainly a score that has opinions that are polar opposite. And after the recent discussion over in Goldsmith's thread I thought that I should have a listen to the CD as a whole to gauge an opinion.

    So far, it's a reasonable orchestral score that's murdered by some awful-sounding electronics.

    What do you know, audio clips that do give a good overview of the score as a whole! rolleyes

    Reading through all the posts in this thread from the first page, this is the first post that compels me to comment.

    If there was ever a score that could be described as "underrated" then this is one!

    The themes for Suzanne and Gabrielle Castella are what stands out for me from this score.

    Agree with you about the 'underrated'. This deserves a much bigger audience. Lovely themes! The Suzanne theme would do Herrmann proud.

  8. I´ve become quite fond again of The Last Samurai recently. I played it a lot when the movie came out, and then it got lost somehow under a giant pile of other things. When I testplayed Guild Wars: Factions last week, which features another great score by Jeremy Soule (again!), it immediately let me pull Zimmer´s score from the pile and play those fantastic, haunting tracks again (I mean the quiet ones, not the bombast "we´re all gonna die" tracks - they are great, but this time, I was looking for the really great stuff).

    Well, of course. The Last Samurai contains some of the most beautiful and heartfelt material he ever wrote, imo.

    I didn't get that far last night. I'm continuing my listen this evening.

    When I was listening to it last night I kept thinking that for specific orchestral parts between the electronics that was listenable they tended to remind me of other Goldsmith scores...so I thought that I'd just be better listening to these other scores rather than being assaulted by more plinky-plonky electronics.

    I'm not sure it's that they sound particularly dated. It's more that they're just not very appealling sounds.

    I can understand that. It's not a score I ever suggest to newbies... perhaps only that waltz track.

    I like all of it, even the synths. Granted, I never used to like the synths, but my tastes have grown and evolved since I first got into film music (which was when I was about 9-10 I guess? Maybe earlier). Now I love every bit of it! (Well, maybe not the singing... but I still like the actual music.)

    you can heat it, or love it. I really love it, and probably it's the best of his movie scores.

    NP:Bourne Supremacy (John powell)

    I'm tempted to say is Powell's best score.

    Anthony, Do you have to track by track analisys?

    an Overture (Goa), a dramatic track (Nach deutchland), a montage scene (to the roof), a great cat and mouse music( moscow wind up), a final action climax (Bim Bam smah) a closeure (Atonement). and a lot of personality!

    but then there are Paycheck, United 93, Happy feet, Mr and Mrs smith, Agent Cody Banks..
  16. Legend is very hit or miss with me too. There are parts that give me shivers, but the synths are really out of place and disrupt the overal loveliness of the melodies. I could never in my lifetime give it 4 stars or more.

    Now this is Powell's best score. But what do you mean track by track analysis? Analysis of what exactly? confused

    I enjoy Speed Racer far more than The Incredibles or Mission Impossible 3. I think he has different styles to his scores, and as far as styles go, I think Speed Racer is his best score for that style. I don't think people give Speed Racer the credit it deserves.

    I didn't count the animation movies (ratatouille is one of his best scores ever ). I find Speed Racer more thamatic than M:I 3 and more exiting than Star trek.

    A lot of original orchestrations and energy here.
  24. Hans Zimmer - The Peacemaker (complete bootleg)

    Much better than the official release which is a bit messy. I renamed the track titles for my own sake. It's more like what's happening in film than the generic words that are in the bootleg, I guess. Good orchestral work from Hans, even if some orchestrations aren't quite spot-on. It took few years for Hans to write something more complex AND more orchestral.

    I play both versions. "sarajevo" or "chase" from the original album is better when you have play selected tracks.

    Peacemaker is probably his best action composition. More orchestral and complex than Gladiator and less over worked than At World's End. This score ended a Zimmer "era" and sound.

    I can see Zimmer working close with Spierlberg (the first Dreamwork movie) and trying to do a great symphonic score. His work here really influenced his latter scores.

    If you want John Williams I'm sure you have 10 guys or so , including the maestro himself, who composes music like him.

    That's Why Zimmer is where he is. because he can compose things without any kind of rubbish.
