    Just chanced upon Tintin's link to MusicMe which has a lot of French scores for free streaming smile
    Listened to last night-

    Alexandre Desplat - Un Prophete

    Yet another fine score by this dude. However there are sound effects and dialogues mixed in some of the cues which make it an uneven listening experience. Track Le Respect is just fabulous.

    Hope to listen to Amazone and Inquietudes tonight.

    Breach - Mychael Danna

    I've been itching to listen to this after watching the film yesterday. What a fine score - such elegant, mature music. I haven't heard anything new from Danna in a while - must rectify that.

    Giacchino´s Star Trek is nice, but certainly not great.

    While the theme IS addictive, it loses its appeal after some time, and gets close to annoying the way it is nearly always fully blown into our faces. A lot more (slower) variation would have been nice (and needed), especially during the arrival on the Enterprise.

    Nailin´ the Kelvin did nothing for me. Absolutely nothing. The whole scene felt wrong and forced and terribly clichéed.

    Spock´s Theme, on the other hand, was much better, but not enough to save the score.

    The End Title has a certain charme to it and is probably the best track on the album, because it combines the famous Classic Theme with the best of the new stuff.

    Same process I did a couple of years ago after watching the film. A score that is definitely more appreciated after you´ve experienced the film. What a fine track "The Arrest" is, enhancing even more Chris Cooper´s performance and providing a proper closure for all the characters. Excellent!

    NP: Australia - David Hirschfelder and apparently a whole bunch of other people including Baz Luhrman?? (at least according to iTunes)

    I made my own custom mix of the score promo and the iTunes release which includes re-arrangements of the most interesting parts of the score. My playlist is two hours long! shocked

    I think it's an excellent score, but my opinion of it would probably decrease if I knew any of the works it was stealing from. Also my affection for the movie severely biases my opinion of it. If I didn't love the movie so much I'd probably be very bored with this score. But I love it.

    I think I'll be editing out the End Title in future plays, thank the whatsits it's at the end of the album, I've never enjoyed the original series theme beyond the opening fanfare.

    Hmm. I've just started exploring Desplat this year. Can't think of another work of his in the same vein. It's a lot subdued/bleak and atmospheric in parts. I can't describe music well but I'll try-
    There's something like a 3 note motif that appears often as elongated brass lines. It's most subdued in Un Prophete and builds further in La Sortie, La Prophetie and most prominently in Gunfight. And of course, there's the awesome Le Respect which has a circular, rising motif and is what you'd get if Desplat did Chevaliers de Sangreal.

    Alexandre Desplat - Les Corps Impatients

    Hah! What a cool coincidence! I said earlier that I couldn't think of anything by Desplat that was close to Un Prophete. Well, this score comes pretty close with the brooding strings although things are more prominent here. Just lovely! I melt!
    No wonder there's a review for this by franz.

    Danna's easily one of the most gifted composers working out there. His music is always deeply melodic, genuinely inventive and very elegant.

    I made the mistake of listening to it too...such a noisy, amateurish mess of noises! This should be the kind of work that should make many people loose their jobs, if it were in another industry but film music.

    A R Rahman - Blue

    Say what you want about his scores but the dude's song writing is incredible! Just listened to the newest Bolly soundtrack for an underwater themed adventure/action film-- Blue. The songs are uber-cool cool . Very catchy and infectious.
    There's a song Rehnuma which starts off bluesy but develops later into a fantastic 'Rahman-does-Bond'. I was planning on listening to Desplat tonight but I can't stop playing this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNbEdMmNZAM

    It´s certainly music from another time, and not my preferred style, too. But if you did grow up with the original series, and loved and cherished it long before there was a Motion Picture scored by Jerry Goldsmith, the theme has a nostalgic value that reaches deeper into some part of your soul. It IS Trek through and through, and that´s what makes it a great addition to a score for a Classic Trek movie.

    Stylistically, I´m absolutely with you. Terrible music. biggrin

    Ultraman: Great (Sinsuke Kazato)

    Gorgeous and epic orchestral work that I suppose must be the symphonic arrangement from a quirky Japanese TV show's music (correct me if I'm wrong). Strong themes, fanfares and impeccable performances from the Adalaide Symphony Orchestra are the strong points of this album. You don't need to be a fan or have seen / heard the original themes to love this. The album features 9 long suites to really get you into the sheer scope of the music, which is deliciously grand, resulting in plenty of time for the cues to develop to often spectacular heights.

    The album is still available at SAE, where I got it. Check it out, you might be surprised!!

    Some of the music can be heard in this vid, crappy quality though. The CD is much better.

  30. NP: Infernal Affairs II (Chan Kwong Wing)

    A score of sweep and grandeur. 'Cry' and 'Forgive and Forget' are very potent.
