It´s certainly music from another time, and not my preferred style, too. But if you did grow up with the original series, and loved and cherished it long before there was a Motion Picture scored by Jerry Goldsmith, the theme has a nostalgic value that reaches deeper into some part of your soul. It IS Trek through and through, and that´s what makes it a great addition to a score for a Classic Trek movie.

Couldn´t agree more. The tracks you mention (I´d add the first track, "1991") are so sad and dramatic, fitting the movie in an splendid way, specially "Forgive and Forget", scoring the best sequence in the whole trilogy. What a great movie trilogy, and what a great movie music trilogy. Totally recommended.

Couldn´t agree more. You´re very welcome, especially because of a certain comment I got recently about Goldsmith´s theme being the most iconic Trek theme from a person who hasn´t even seen all classic episodes. As a matter of fact, the regularity with which I have to tell 'normal' people who listen in to my stuff that Goldsmith´s theme is not from Star Wars, but Star Trek, while Courage´s theme always gets a comment about that Spock guy, seems to indicate that to talk about the true heritage and iconography of Trek music a certain knowledge of the topic is quite helpful sometimes. -

Luckly after this score King Arthur and Tears of the Sun was a nice come back to Zimmer powerful sound, because in the last samurai sometimes he was
I don't want to be missunderstood, The last samurai is a very coherent, personal and gorgeous score, but sometimes this "loooooooooooooong" notes make me lose my pacience. Sometimes is trading water like in the first 3 minutes of " A hard teacher".
"A way of life" is one of the most beautifuls tracks by Zimmer. " To Know My enemy" is deliciously Beyond Rangoonish (specially the last part), and Taken is powerfull. Of course the winner is the Red Warrior theme, amazing in the end of "Idilly's end" and in "Red Warrior". -

Il papa buono - Ennio Morricone
It doesn't matter if it's a Hollywood feature film or an Italian TV movie, the Maestro always delivers his best. In this case it was an Italian TV movie about Pope John XXIII and the score is very good - mostly the friendship-theme and the choral parts. -

NP: Total Recall - Jerry Goldsmith
A masterpiece of action, and film, scoring. Very dynamic, vibrant and, at time, suspenseful. My favorite Goldsmith score. -

NP: There Will Be Blood - Johnny Greenwood
Yesterday some one mentioned on Facebook that this score is easily the finest of the decade so I had to give it another spin to hear what all the fuzz in about.
Admittedly, I do remember some of the score from the film but not much and I do remember being totally uncomfortable with the score as stand alone listen. I'm not not saying the music is bad because it is definitely very well written and has a clear focus. It's a score that while listening to it makes you want to go back to the film to hear exactly how such interest pieces as "Proven Lands" with those jabbing figures and odd rhythms play out or "Eat Him By His Own Light" with that collage of instruments dominated by some fascinating piano playing work with the images on screen. I liked the film very much so I have no issue in revisiting it again.
What I think bothers me is that the darkness and dreariness never lets up. It a very depressing work and as I finish the album it's still very uncomfortable to sit through and difficult to digest. It's one of those scores that should just stay in the picture.
Oh ya... is it the best of the decade? Far, far from it. Is it one of the most interesting and fascinating of the decade... for sure.
Now onto EXODUS

NP: Exodus - Ernest Gold
I'm only a few tracks in and I'm already in love. The sound quality is absolutely stunning! Probably the best sounding Tadlow release to date. These Prague recordings are just getting better and better! And that theme... WHAT. A. THEME!!! I fell in love with it when I first heard it many years ago on a Kunzel recording and I'm falling in love all over again hearing it's many variations throughout the score! Thank you Tadlow for this gem! I highly recommend this masterwork to everyone!

NP: Speed Racer - Michael Giacchino
A long time ago, before my time, there apparently used to be these guys who would actually like, use music to add emotion to poorly executed films so that they were actually somewhat enjoyable instead of being completely terrible. These guys had names like Jerry and Basil.
The score I am listening to now is something of a modern-day example of that.I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to! -

When I think back to some of the early Silva recordings the turnaround has been tremendous. This is a wonderful effort from Tadlow.
