Age of Pirates is on the opposite side of the spectrum! Besides the male chorus there is nothing Zimmerish in this score what so ever! It's a thunderous, lyrical, old fashioned symphonic score. It also contains some quieter pieces featuring gorgeous and inspired instrumental solos... the gentle flute and violin theme in "Moon Way" is something you'd only hear in a John Williams score and is a nice contrast to the big bombastic material that dominates the album. It's a welcome change of pace and unfortunately is something you rarely hear in modern day film music. Superb stuff!!!

Thanks for the capsule review. Thunderous, symphonic, gorgeous insturmental solos, male chorus, bombastic,.... that´s exactly my cup of tea. WANT!!

Leaving the classical rip off aside ( i mean this dramatic string theme from the opening and the closing tracks) the rest is sublime.

I like the Khachaturian lift and I think it fits the feel of the movie really well. I hadn't heard the Gayane suite before I heard it being referenced in film music, but I certainly went looking for it once I had heard it.

    Thanks to James Horner!!

It's all ready-made samples my friend and all the action cues are repetitive and childish. It certainly tired me but if i was to choose a custom playlist, i'd only insert the ambient cues which can be somewhat suffered.

Fair enough, not your thing then. All music has its admirers and its haters, why should ours be different?

Yeah, those action cues are really really immature work, samples and loops being put one ontop of other. Anyway don't mind me as long as you enjoy it, i am also biased from the unshameful p.r. in facebook for this score that has been breaking my balls all this time and from some remarkably ignorant comments this composer dude seems to have said around.

NP: The Saint - Graeme Revell

First listen... I actually played the last track first since it received a lot of hype from I review a read a few days ago. shocked The Love Theme is magnificent. The rest of the score is surprisingly really well done. Admittedly, I'm not a fan of Revell's music - minus things like Eaters of the Dead, Red Planet, The Crow, Mighty Morphin Powers and a few others - so when I popped this one in I wasn't prepared for what I was about to hear. Great theme, superb orchestrations, excellent blend of electronics and drum loops with a catchy jazz noir sound... an excellent Bond styled score with a voice of it's own. IMHO, this is one of Revell's finest works and I think everyone here would be please to own a copy. Check it out if you can... if only for the superb love theme!

I don't like the middle-eastern sound in this score... Somehow middle-eastern-ish melodies sound boring to me when played by western orchestra. (That's why I'm not a big fan of Prince Of Egypt etc.) But except for that, I like this score, beautiful main theme, uplifting orchestra and the gorgeous finale! cool

Aaah , Sheena starring the lovely Tanya Roberts - another one of my guilty pleasures ... lick
Yeah , I know it isn't the greatest movie in the world but it's one of those bad films that make them actually quite good and fun to watch . Am I making any sense here ? lol ... Maybe the OST is an even bigger surprise , it's actually a nice little score . Fleshing out his traditional symphonic arrangements with synthesizers , Mr. Hartley simply but effectively contrasts the old world with the new as portrait in the film .
Throw in a main theme a la Vangelis that keeps sticking in your mind and you have a winner !
If this hasn't convinced you , then just watch the film for miss Roberts alone ... biggrin

Eagerly looking forward to watching the movie, but meanwhile I am absolutely addicted and in love with this score which I consider not only the best from Mike recently, but the best score of 2009 so far. If Mike does not at least get nominated for an Oscar for this then it will be nothing short of a sin. And of course, fingers crossed for the rumoured import version CD release, I'm craving to have this thing in lossless quality. Five star score, hands down.
