Oh, so it's intentionally shite. tongue

(I jest. wink Each to their own!)
  1. Man on Fire is a rare case of the visuals being "in character". It's a visual representation of how fucked up Denzel Washington's character is.

Talking of JNH I just had the misfortune to (barely) sit through LADY IN THE WATER.

    Utter, complete junk...RUBBISH!

JNH's score is the only redeaming feature of this turd.

That's strange. I think Lady still does have a bit of that magic that is overflowing in his first three films. I like the slightly crazy ensemble cast and how Night gives his characters their own respective meaning in the story.

    dizzy

"magic?" I saw and felt none. Happily, I will say that I will never see this film again.

    Unstoppable

Tony Scott's best film in a couple of decades. 2/10

Agreed. Tony Scott is one of the worst directors, along with Michael Bay and George Lucas. Ney, perhaps even worse. At least George Lucas has the good sense to allow good music in his films.

It could have been a mildly interesting film were it not for Scott's prepubescent style of directing. Good god what a terrible film.

I happen to love Unstoppable, it was one of the most intense action movies I've seen in last years, really. And his filmmaking is not as crazy as it is in most of his recent films, he calmed down here.

I also saw Top Gun recently for the third time maybe. The script is far from brilliant, but literally nobody has visually topped the aerial fight scenes yet. Visually it is the best dogfight movie ever made.

A horrible, horrible homo-erotic man fest of a movie. The aerial scenes are the ONLY worthwhile feature.

  2. Don't blame Tony for that though, that's the way the script (basically not much more than a "enlist" movie or whatever is the name for such stuff) was written and Bruckheimer/Simpson (yes, those guys) wanted it.

And comparing Tony Scott to Michael Bay is completely unfair. Crazy may he be, but Tony Scott as a director still has basic storytelling abilities, which is something that Bay, a graduate of a film school, still hasn't possessed...

  3. Also with some notable exceptions, where the script doesn't allow that, actors in Tony's movies actually can act. Michael Bay has wasted even Alec Baldwin and Jon Voight.

The problem I had with it in the film is he relied on that technique too much. He goes for style over substance, and it completely takes me out of the movie. Admittedly I seem to remember Man on Fire being an okay film, but I distinctly remember being put off by Scott constantly needing it to look like a drug trip. His films are always too heavily edited and it's jarring to the senses, let alone his need to constantly have the camera moving.

The last boy scout, Crimson tide and Enemy of the state are great movies, imo. Watching over the rest of his filmography, I've kinda liked all of the ones I've seen.

And I hate Michael Bay movies with a vengeance btw.

  4. Steven, he got that hyperkinetic style later on. If you watch The Beverly Hills Cop II and most of The Last Boy Scout, those are a series of very quickly edited static shots.

No, I haven't. The cast looks good though, it even has the legendary Shane Rimmer.

Went and saw the art film called Martha Marcy May Marlene and really didn't care for it at all. It had to do with a commune cult and how one woman tried to adapt back into society.

  6. While we're talking about Tony Scott's movies, I'll just say I like Crimson Tide and Days of Thunder a lot.

Top Gun I recently saw again and it was fun, but it's a film that is clearly a product of the 80s.

And the music in all three films rocks! But that's just my opinion...

You keep saying "cheesy" as if it's a bad thing. Sometimes cheese really rules! Cheddar, camembert, Top gun main theme, goats cheese, all fantastic stuff.

Anyway, you seem a bit more negative today Timmer, that what I'm used to. So many posts about how stuff sucks. wink

I enjoy Spy Game and Crimson Tide a lot. Even Enemy of the State is a bit of a guilty pleasure. I can't say I've found any enjoyment from most of his films of the last 10 years or so.

I'd agree with that. And I'd add DEJA VU to the list. I suspect I'd enjoy UNSTOPPABLE too.
Even what I've seen of MAN ON FIRE is not unbearable. None of these are great films (and certainly nothing prior to CRIMSON TIDE is re-watchable), but he's no worse a pair of hands than many, and if Michael Bay is the yardstick, I've not seen one Bay film that tops even the worst Tony Scott film I've seen.
