No. Cliche was there in Titanic but very cleverly hidden.

Seriously? Titanic was a parade of cheesy cliches. And flubber must be one of the worst films of all time.

Flubber is definitely one of the worst big budget films ever made, no doubt about it.

A fantastic film. Not a masterpiece as the hype will lead you to believe, but that doesn't matter when the experience is so good. (And definitely worth seeing in the cinema in 3D before you see it in any other medium.)

Cameron has very mainstream "Hollywood" sensibilities, we all know this - and this film is no different. But it's not a bad thing when he's able to pull it off with so much style. He turns a simple story (a well tread one at that) and turns it into something worth seeing. That's more than can be said about certain other mainstream Hollywood directors, aka Michael 'likes to make expensive softcore porn movies' Bay.

The music? Like the film, it rarely strays from anything too 'left-field'. Its sound is very mainstream (and surprisingly Zimmerish in certain places, something I didn't think I'd admit when I first read the initial reactions on this forum - but, well, it's quite blatant in one particular scene), but again, like the film, it's pulled off with lots of style; that typical flair that makes Horner one of my favourite composers for film.

Even if you don't enjoy the story or the general set-up, being that Dances With The Last Samurais might not be for everyone admittedly, then what will invariably save it is the visuals. They are quite simply stunning and worth the price of the ticket alone!

I also liked the 2D ( wink ) characterization of General Quaritch. He's someone you genuinely love to hate! I honestly wasn't bothered by the character's lack of "depth" as has been noted on this forum, and thought Stephen Lang was just brilliant for the part.

Oh, and good LORD is Michelle Rodriguez hot. :panting: lick

Oh, definitely. Anyone who served in the army, they'll know he's actually pretty realistic.

La Meglio Gioventu (The Best of Youth)
Epic Italian TV series film from 2003. Twice as long as Nuovo Cinema Paradiso and better. It covers the life of an Italian family (mostly two brothers) from the 60s till 2000s. Wonderful storytelling. When it's over you can't help but pause to take it all in. Wow! Into my list of top 10 films it goes.

There's no original score. It's all a collection of songs, classical works and other library stuff. It's amazing how well Astor Piazzolla's Oblivion works as the main theme of the film.

    Star Trek

Still enjoyed it, but it's harder to forgive the film's flaws the second time round (ie the huge coincidences and leaps of faith required to propel the story along). But the film does have a lot going for it - the sense of fun, the young cast (like Alan I'm also extremely wedded to the original cast and crew when it comes to Star Trek, but unlike him I think the replacements all did well - I'm especially fond of the new Uhura!) and the score. It IS repetitive, but I think it works very well. So there.
  3. Uhura, Neytiri... This girl will make a career.

Actually I saw Star Trek yesterday too and enjoyed it immensely. It IS real fun and I didn't think of the leap of faiths (though I guess that's because the convention allowed it - it's a movie about alternate realities after all!). Giacchino worked great, there are some very cinematic ideas he had there. Cinematography - very good, I loved how the camera work was all around the place without us losing any sense of what's happening around, I don't think there were much hand-held work if any. The movie was surely good.

  4. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Incredible movie.... incredible boring. Still don't unterstand what the point of this was? I stopped watching after the 158th time the sky or a tree was shown... sleep
  5. It's not for everyone, but for those whom it is for, those people - and I'm one of them - are very glad someone had the guts to make it.
