Nazis, Romanian fortress, Demonic powers at work......what's not to like? Well, EVERYTHING! Just got back from...
CLOUD ATLAS (The Wachowski's, Tom Tykwer) ****
Thrilling filmmaking. It's a concept that shouldn't work (six interconnected stories, told simultaneously with hardly ever sticking to a segment for more than a few minutes, three hours long), but works in an exciting way through a beautiful visual style, strong musical score and the philosophical glue that holds it all together. Perfect balance in (black) humor, sci-fi and adventure and strong performances from its entire cast. Love it or hate it (there seems to be no middle ground, and I can see why it doesn't work for some) CLOUD ATLAS is a labor of love and confident filmmaking that is a joy to behold. -

Absolutely! It's a subtle but integral part of the storytelling. It's been a while that you could think in a film "wait, I hear that theme sung here... What's the relevance?" Can't wait till I get myself the album.

How many times have I seen this? Still bloody brilliant, great cast, creepy bleak atmosphere, great special effects that I'll take over cgi every time and an excellent score by Ennio Morricone.

the special effects are indeed amazing, especially if you compare it with the remake and its ugly CGIwaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!! Where's my nut? arrrghhhhhhh -

I actually liked the prequel, but I know I'm in the minority on that one.
Of course, the 1982 version is a classic.
I've never seen the original Hawks film.
I am extremely serious. -

I liked it as well. I think it's very respectful with the original, and pays several tributes to it. I love how it blends with Carpenter's. And the final minute, with the Morricone motif, nice.Anything with an orchestra or with a choir....at some point will reach you -

Indeed, I knew I'd be getting the soundtrack anyway to hear it 'proper', and I'd be seeing the film as soon as possible, so I allowed myself to hear the Sextet after all the praises (and I wanted to 'know' the melody before going in, and I'm glad since I otherwise might not have recognised it in the first act when it pops up in a source-like way) but not the rest, to experience it first within the film.

I love their collaborations and perfume was one of my all time favorite modern movies so I guess I will love this too

Skyfall
My god, this is the closest the Bond saga is going to be to a direct-to-DVD movie.
THE BAD:
- Awful action (come on guys, this is a Bond movie!). The subway wreck is ridiculous, and the climax looks like an average final combat of Walker Texas Ranger. Not to mention the weak opening chase.
- Terrible direction (why hiring a 'prestigious' director for a Bond movie when you have Martin Campbell, among many other directors that can properly direct action set pieces?).
- The worst score of Bond's modern era. Specially irritating is the introduction, when the music doesn't even fit the picture! The rest is equally boring and irritating. Seriously, any RC minion could have done it better.
- Funny that one of the the more 'serious' scripts of the series (if not THE most serious), is the one where I cared less about the characters. When THAT charcater died, I didn't feel anything (I know, it is a Bond movie, and you are not supposed to cry or feel sald, but still....Vesper Lynd's death in Casino Royale, anyone?).
- Two hours and twenty minutes. Come on....
THE GOOD:
- Javier Bardem: his Jack Sparrow-like villain was hilarious and terrifying at the same time. Still, his hairstyle will keep me awake for years.Anything with an orchestra or with a choir....at some point will reach you -
