Band of Brothers or Open Range or The Iron Giant (the gorgeous Don Juan and lovely Mr Holland's Opus rounding out the top five).

None of which I found even vaguely interesting (although in fairness the lovely Requiem for Band Of Brothers simply wore out its welcome as EVERYBODY scoring war films/games/series/documentaries suddenly started doing these mournful ditties...). For sheer thematic superpower, Robin Hood all the way!

I remember watching the movie and crapping my pants! Don't remember much about the score though although when it comes to this kind of scores, John Murphy's music is what i like!

The score does its job and stays behind the scenes vastly adding to the film.

The movie really gets in your head. Able to scare the crap out of you without resorting to lowly tricks such as frightening little girls and things jumping out.

I read the book and found it very entertaining. I could barely put it down and at one point at about 2:00am something slammed on the roof directly above my room. Scared the heck out of me! I went outside and didn't see anything. sad

    Really?
    shocked

I found it an extraordinarily confused book, that -some interesting ideas notwithstanding- never seemed to find any kind of focus or footing. To this day I'm unsure whether it's a work of fiction, an attempt at unearthing some real-life mystery, or some crank-pot work.

The film, while slightly more palatable in its unity of approach, I found muddled at best, and dragging its feet.

I can definitely see the direction your coming from. I read the book about 6 years ago. I should probably give it another go, to see if my opinion changes.

Me too, and to be honest: I was reading it while seriously sleep-deprived on an intercontinental flight, so that may have tainted the experience. smile

Great songs ( On Days Like These, The Self Preservation Society ) and cool score, just a feel good fun soundtrack! cool

Thanks for telling me the title of the latter song. I saw the movie (I think a half of it if not more, I DID see the big chase though). I loved the song, but didn't get the lyrics in full, lol

If you already have an amp and speakers (or a hi-fi with rca audio input available) you can get a good, modern one for as low as 100 euros.

NP: The Twilight Saga: New Moon ~ Alexander Desplat

Pure bliss!!! Lyrical, dark at times, piano based, my kind of thing!!! Godess Stavi

  2. I agree. It's pretty good. Simpler than some of his scores, but that's by no means a bad thing. Out of his impressive eight scores for the year, this comes in just behind Cheri and Un Prophete for me. I love the love theme that blossoms in the latter half of the album ('Dreamcatcher'), and I also love the way he makes electric guitar work alongside a typically-gentler ensemble.

I loved the 3-note descending basis a la Zimmer's TTRL and Pearl Harbor, LOVED the big brassy and dark action cues, adored the waltzes and softer piano passages, plus the main theme is wholly addictive, memorable and sweeping. Top - 5 score of the year for sure.

    New Moon - Alexandre Desplat

The first track has to be one of the most gorgeous score pieces I've heard this year. There's influence from the better parts of Golden Compass, Birth and Hostage with classic Desplat orchestral music and some underlying synth and bass. Some very dark, pounding action material in tracks like Blood Sample and Wolves Vs. Vampire. The latter is the track I'm listening right now, will play the rest of the album in a while. Great score so far!

    SHIGERU UMEBAYASHI - Daisy

Absolutely gorgeous, lyrical asian-music-meets-west orchestral score full of great piano-led melodies.

RYUICHI SAKAMOTO - the sheltering Sky

One of the most gorgeous musical works written for film.

    NINO ROTA - Godfather

    No comment, really.

Indeed! I liked the book and to be honest the people acting are nothing like I imagined them but anyway... my dad taught me that cinema is magic and you should emerge yourself in it if you want to be but a small part of its beauty!

  3. That's not hard though, Steven. World War II was always more inspiring to composers anyway (even Zimmer!)
