So, in almost two years (Avatar + Sherlock Holmes) they´ve produced a couple of good (but nothing more) scores!
Not quite. AVATAR is a vastly better score but i don't see why we're comparing them
No it's not. and now I have watched the movie, it's even worst. More thoughts in the recent viewing threat.
NP:Sherlock Holmes(Hans Zimmer)
In this score, Zimmer returned to something i thought he have been missed. I don't know what....but even If I consider At world's End and The Dark Knight 2 of his best scores....Sherlock has something, something of what I always loved from Him.
How can I love so much Zimmer ryhtms? "Psycologycal recovery.." it's one cool rythm after another plus powerful orchestral renditions. this 18 minutes track contains almost everything I love from him.
This score it's fucking great. How can you make a rock and Roll score without using electric guitars and using accordion? pure genius! -

Sherlock Holmes is like a very angry/aggressive version of pounding hate sex between As Good As It Gets and Matchstick Men. Take in that visual, people. -

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I too was very impressed today by the past-eras qualities and grace of Abel's string writing for " A single man ".
( i still think you're nuts for liking the tons of poems and very little amount of minimal string lines in "Bright star" though
)Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

Actually I don´t know either. It is not fair, I know. Two different approaches for two VERY different kind of films. Maybe the fact that two of the most controversial composers have released their last work at the same time has turned this into a battle in my sick mind. If I had to choose, I´d pick Avatar anytime though (at the end of the day, Horner is Horner!).Anything with an orchestra or with a choir....at some point will reach you -

NP: The Princess & The Frog - Randy Newman
SONGS
All songs are fun. I love these diverse styles - jazz, country, gospel, all are fun! And catchy. Blue skieeees an' sunshine!
The singers are also good, especially Anika Noni Rose, who has really beautiful voice. I just wish Almost There was longer.
However, they certainly lack something... I felt most songs are somewhat flat. I don't know exactly why but probably it's lack of big enough "climax" as you usually expect from musical numbers?
I also expected a good "emotional" song from Randy, like Part Of Your World (The Little Mermaid) or Reflection (Mulan), because he is the guy who wrote the beautiful When She Loved Me. The "Prologue" song by Tiana could be the one but it's only 30 seconds. Probably the story didn't need that kind of song...
Oh by the way... what is this horrible song by the Yo-Yo guy? Actually the song itself isn't bad, but please stop banging stupid percussion and toy piano out of rhythm.
SCORE
Well, it's usual Randy Pixar score. I can hear Toy Story 2 and Monsters Inc. here and there!
But it's not as good as those, because themes are too scattered within mickey moucing.
Finale is big but not so big.
Probably I have to wait for the movie to enjoy this soundtrack more. And this is definitely not Alan Menken, but that's not what I complain. If I want a new comedic Menken I just play Enchanted. Or for a new serious Menken I will wait for Snow Queen. It's just the beginning of new Disney!

No. It means that, IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE, I prefer Horner´s work to Zimmer´s. Although, as I´ve said, there´s no point comparing both scores. I have to listen the music in both films though, but I´ve been told Avatar´s music works brilliantly in the movie.Anything with an orchestra or with a choir....at some point will reach you -

Are you ready for Jordi's Obsession again? In the best happy feet way?
NP:SH
One of Zimmer best scores!
"not in blood but in Bond" it's a really depressive (in a good way track) I can't wait to see the scene.
"panic, sher bloody panic" contains a really powerful and inspired version of the main theme. When you think Zimmer can't do it cooler, then a rythmic variation, taikos and some sound effect push the track in the sky! -

A Christmas Carol Alan Silvestri
One of my favourite themes from 2009. This is very much a continuation of his Polar Express score, which is neither a bad thing nor surprising considering both films are based on Christmas-themed books, both directed by Zemeckis and both motion-capture films aimed at the 'family' market. I'd be surprised if what we got was anything different from this! -

ScoreNotes.com has a new audio interview up, and I jsut trascribed a 25 minute interview with him on the score to "A Single Man" (don't know when the person I trascribed it for will have it up).
Two interesting highlights from the interview:
He was the second composer on "A Single Man"
and
He is being seriously considered for the third Twilight film. The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else. -
