I watched Titanic again last night and my God is that score ever really good! It's not like I forgot what it sounded like but it's been a while since I saw the movie (excellent film as well) and I forgot just how powerful and emotional Horner music is with the visuals. Outstanding score with a great, great love theme!

    NP: Avatar - James Horner

Not bad but not great! Pretty average stuff but enjoyable!

The latter half of the album (especially the final 4 tracks) really makes up for the lethargic first half. And Nicholas Dodd really gets is moment in the spotlight with his orchestration of "War." A bit of Sahara in there don't you think? I give this one a 3.5 out of 5.

Can someone please for the love of Christ clear something up for me:

Did Nicholas Dodd actually work on this score or is it just a temp-bleed/plagiarism issue!?

He is credited as one of the orchestrators which also includes Horner, JAC Redford, Jon Kull, and Gary K. Thomas.

    First listen... shocked

Gorgeous. A mix of Philip Glass minimalism and Mansell's The Fountain. Excellent score!

Nice that you noted the Glass elements too, Erik, i heard those upon first listening. It's not of course as modern as The fountain, but i can see your 2nd point in there. In any case though, it's a very good score from a very promising composer (although i've heard his other animated feature, 'terra' something and got a headache).

  4. NP: New Moon (Desplat)

After spending a few days with Avatar and Broken Embraces, it's nice to get back to this. Definitely a significant score from this year, and it has the benefit of being the work of someone who still thinks of film scoring as something to write new ideas for.

It's cold and snowy here as well, but is that the regular album or the expanded by Prometheus?

Which one do you prefer? The expanded drags a little IMHO and doesn't hold together as well as the short album. Still the music gets top marks in the originality department. It's really a very good score and its effect in the film is outstanding.

That's what's setting him apart from the bunch i think, the way he sees films and their music, completely incompatible with our days. And that's a huge PRO.

I'm far from being a fan of this man's work but Coco Avant Chanel and this score are among some of the strongest scores written this year!

Well, when it first came out everybody talked about it and this is something that might influence negatively one's opinion on a score, especially if he's generally not a fan of the composer. My point is that NEW MOON is indeed a very good score, maybe some more listens might do it better justice for you?
