IT. IS. BRILLIANT. Very very jazzy album but full of melodies, up tempo, swinging and ( of course ) loungey, it's only 36 minutes long but not a moment is wasted. I hated the LP when I first bought it ( I was expecting it to sound like Bond ) but I was only 15 years old and had a lot of maturing to do. shame wink

NP : AVATAR - James Horner

On my 2nd listen after playing it earlier this morning, I'm really enjoying it and I think it'll be an album that get's better on repeat listens and will reward the listener with it's intricacies and subtleties. Oh, and the 'I See You' theme is gorgeous, everytime a statement of this comes up it sends little shivers of delight up and down my spine.

Not a bad album but didn't like its use in the film. I thought the tone was all wrong.

I thought it was great in the film ( I've only seen it once ), it was hearing it in the film that made me immediately seek it out.

NP : THREE DECADES OF TV THEMES - Paul Lewis

This is much more than just TV themes with much of the works here ( re-recorded by the composer with full orchestra and, where required, choir ) in the form of suites, the longest being the gorgeously evocative The Island at nearly 10 minutes. This is TV music of the very highest quality ( a la Giacchino ) and makes for a beautiful album.

And yet it's such a neglected score on my part. I imported this album in 2004 and this is only the 3rd time I've listed to it in its entirety in the past 5 and a half years! shocked

Wow! shocked I think I've played it a number of times this year!? And I think I've played it at the very least once a year since I first bought it as a double LP ( yes, back in 1977 ), one of those scores that I can play in my head from begining to end.

NP : MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS - John Barry

Gorgeous score, a shame it couldn't have been expanded on CD from it's original ( only about 28 minutes ), still, at least it never outplays it's welcome.

This is a lovely day to be playing music for me, no commitments, just great music, after the past few weeks I've had I think I deserve a little self indulgence.

NP : LUST, CAUTION - Alexandre Desplat

The kind of film that John Barry would have been a candidate to score at one time and Desplat delivers beautifully with, an at times, Barryeque sound.

    Top notch! cool

  1. There must be a side to Barry that I haven't heard before. Much as I like his music, I don't think he could have ever written that score. The transparent layered orchestration is the opposite of Barry's thick homophonic sound.

Twilight Zone: The Movie Jerry Goldsmith

I was listening to Mark McKenzie's fantastic score to Blizzard since I'm in the mood for something magical - but I'm really not in the mood for anything sugary.

    Thank god for Goldsmith.

True Michael but there is an underlying Barryesque feel to this score, particularly in the main theme.

Great score! Kick The Can has a bitter sweet schmaltz to it ( I love it ) and 'Nightmare' is just brutal.

Excellent score with many powerhouse moments that point towards what he would later do with a certain Tolkien trilogy.
