    NP:AVATAR

After the 19 millions of his second Monday ( What makes this movie a real phenomenon), I wanted to play this.

The sum of all his parts make this score highly enternaining: "new Age" style, tribal elements from Apocalypto, an addictive new main theme, Dodd electronic bits, Zimmer anthems....

    No. it's not.

When you say, it's am average score but still is a 5 star score because it's from Horner, it's really silly (yes, i'm ready for your "attacks").

Sherlock Holmes is far better score, far better music but not so easy to listen.

Why is everyone comparing Zimmer with Horner all the time at the moment? To keep it from being embarassing, at least compare Zimmer with people more on his level (Francis Lai, say).

Yeap. We have to compare Zimmer with real genius like Goldsmith and Williams.

Not composers who are so limited has been composing the same thing (literally) for almost 20 years.

JP: TWILIGHT: NEW MOON - Alexandre Desplat
A very nice score that lacks a bit of Desplat's usual sophistication but wins in pure Hollywood romance with it, including a more agressive side I hadn't heard yet from this otherwise so subtle French composer.

However, the score is mainly elevated by the superb main theme, only fully explored in the opening and closing tracks and is somewhat disappointingly developed during the rest of the score; I expected more in terms of clever thematics which keeps this score from truly standing out. We'll probably have to wait for the next Twilight installment for this.

Oh, One question Erik. You who always mentions the recording....

Do you think the recording of the brass section in some tracks (like in "Quarich") are not mixed loud enough? I have the same feeling that I had with Troy that the brass section is not powerful enough and it is eclipsed by the pecusion.

Simon Rhodes comes from a classical background so his recordings are far more open and not as detailed. However, in saying that, he did record The Mask of Zorro and The Four Feathers and both of those sound dynamite! Rhodes prefers a more concert hall sound so that's why you are having a hard time picking out the details of the brass section during an action cue dominated by percussion.

NP MOUSE HUNT - ALAN SILVESTRI

I believe this is most underrated score of all time. I haven't seen people much talked about this score. This score is one of the best works of Silvestri. Even though on some parts score is slightly dull, it would certainly provides good listening experience ( maybe to me alone biggrin ) . Of course, the length of the album is very short. However, i am quite pleased.

  1. Mouse Hunt is definitely BIG FUN.

Best 30 minutes you can spend any hour of the day ! punk

    Courage Under Fire (James Horner)

The score opens with a killer action cue that is a precursor to the exciting stuff he wrote for Titanic. In fact a part of it is practically repeated in 'Hard to Starboard'. So when I first heard this I was completely wowed. It has tremendous building power and I would've loved the rest of the score to be as good. After that cue things slow down drastically, so what I thought to be a kickass action score turned out to be an overly dramatic one, but quite beautiful at times. 'The Elegy' is emotionally brilliant. Again a soundtrack that does wonders for the film.

    .

This score is a bland copy of "glory" But....... the second track, the 10 minutes one is punk punk punk

Oh God, those electric guitars! I love the use of this track with the Titanic collision with the Iceberg! biggrin
  2. I wouldn't say Courage Under Fire is a copy of Glory, where is the choir then? But they have a similar slow and emotional sound, Glory's more pronounced though.

It's not much like Glory (for the most part it's as much a Copland "homage" as Saving Private Ryan is, with some Apollo 13-style action music thrown in) but when it comes to Horner, some people just hear what they want to hear!
