Influenced by Steven I've just been playing a list of great themes including Take A Hard Ride, Breakheart Pass and Bandolero,

I love Goldsmith´s westerns main themes, but I find it pretty tough to listen to the whole scores.

For me, Goldsmith's western score are like a niche interest within a niche interest, and I absolutely love them! But I can completely understand why others don't - they don't always make for the most pleasant listens, especially if you're not a fan of that type of score (I'm usually not, but Goldsmith's westerns seem to click with me unlike, say, Morricone westerns).

It's a lazy Sunday and I think I'll dedicate most it to listening to unfamiliar Goldsmith scores.

INCHON is a really good score, it was funded by some religious nut job if I remember right!?

It doesn't get a very high rating on IMDb. Seems religious nut jobs don't make very good movies!

NP : Evil Dead - Joseph LoDuca

Not an easy score to listen at , you really have to be in the mood for it .
It has some lovely tracks though , I really like the 'Introduction' track and 'Eye Games / Charm' .
The rest sounds very athmospheric and chaotic which of course fits the film perfectly .

NP : Evil Dead II - Joseph LoDuca

This one sounds more symphonic and is maybe therefore more accessible then the first one .

NP : The Ghost Writer - Alexandre Desplat

Another great continuation in the Hostage/Largo Winch direction, although unfortunately it often feels too quiet. More action material from Desplat is in dire need but it just doesn't come. cry

Once again the album suffers from rather poor arrangement, so sit tight and I'll be back soon with a custom playlist...

Edit: And I don't appreciate the first and last tracks being exactly the same cue aside from one timpani hit at the end. Not one bit. angry

Moses the Lawgiver - Ennio Morricone

Just by listening to the score one wouldn't say it was written for a religious epic from the 1970s. Lots of experimental, modern music on this double CD. Morricone experiments with some electronics, some strange instruments and the human voice in this soundtrack but there are the usual gorgeous, melodic and memorable tracks too. As a whole it is highly enjoyable. I listened the entire double CD (100 minutes) without a break and it was a very rewarding listen.
  4. NP: Adaptation (Carter Burwell)

Burwell really was the 'heart' in this film. His gentle music has me feeling sympathetic for Nicholas Cage just by listening to it, and that's no mean feat.

    Balto - James Horner

It doesn't matter that everybody seems to be mad about this score, it just doesn't do anything for me. There are maybe 3-4 tracks that I love but I find the rest rather boring and without direction. I've been trying to "get into" this score for about 5 years now but probably I have to give up. It's still Horner's weakest animation score in my opinion - and not among his top film scores either.

You know what, I'm not crazy about this one either, and I'm a big Horner nut (or used to be). 3-4 tracks is about all I love too. Give me We're Back!, Land Before Time or both of the Fievel's any hour of the day.

Balto is my most played of his animation scores. Definitely one of his strongest score regardless of animation or live action. It is a very powerful score.

I find it a mixed listen. I consider the score to consist of three elements:

1.Wonderful melodic content (The two themes and the "Israel" standalone tune)
    2.Extremely harsh dissonance
    3.Incredibly dull source music

It's difficult to berate this album, when it has such brilliant melodies. But two thirds of the running time is almost entirely unlistenable, which drives me nuts every time I try to listen to it. A 1 CD, 50 minute release, I think would have been vastly superior.

Worst thing is that I hear from other morriconians that a wonderful theme from the movie wasn't even included on the 2CD album. Grrrr. Later, apparently, Morricone used it as the main theme in the "La bibbia" film series, but in a watered down version.

Being heard The Thin Red LIne a couple of times this weekend I really enjoyed it, but again I prefer choose The last Samurai instead of TTRL. "Beam" by Powell is really mind blowing, I know why is one of the few cues used completly in the movie. "the Village" contains a really inspired version of "journey to the line" theme in the middle.

    NP:The Time Machine (Badelt)

It was so many time since my last listening....

Even with The Edge's theme, or perhaps because that, its a fantastic score.

Badelt's mix of orchestral, always makes his scores sound more synthetic that they are ( Even today with TMNT )

PS: Where is Shangai??? i want to listen it!

    NP: Ryomaden - Naoki Sato

Bombastic main title piece. There are some killer tracks in here, though some of them involve a kind of MVRC approach to it. It's less orchestral than I had expected it to be, relying on more modern sound patches, with grungy, grinding guitar, sometime backed by rhythmic synth choir, and you can even hear some faux middle eastern sound design here. I don't mind these music ideas, but it's kinda distracting how modern this score is for a period drama. So the ratio of synthy vs orchetral stuff is about 50/50, replete with a couple of typical pensive piano cues. There's an Ennio Morricone reference in "Confession" that made me pause a bit and think.... was that from The Mission(?).

I'm gonna encourage you guys to seek out and listen to it to see what your responses will be.

I don't think the score is generic, it's a varied score with good moments, good orchestral cues and runs through a few score genres as most of these score does . But it does have some (2-3) modern sounding tracks that covers some pretty generic stuff (think BHD/Modern Warfare 2), but those are quite few.

NP: Total Recall - Jerry Goldsmith

Even though I'm still suffering from an inner ear infection which has pretty much blocked sound in my left ear and has my right ear operating at about 75% I'm still enjoying the shit out of one the all time great action scores! While the original Varese album was a brilliantly produced album featuring all of the major highlights from the score the complete Deluxe Edition offers so much more and showcases a score that flows effortlessly in its completely form from one track to another. Not a note wasted! A stunning score!
