    Yes. When I saw your positive comments on Les Roses de Dublin I revisited this (I'd remembered that I haven't any of these tracks on my mp3 player). It's very similar to Les Aventures de David Balfour (aka Kidnapped in the UK) and I think that my strong attraction to Kidnapped put me off Les Roses de Dublin.

    That's a shame though, as it's a gorgeous score. It might help if you try to think of it as a sequel instead. wink

    I'm not sure which of the themes I prefer. Even though they are similar, I think they differ enough to be enjoyed as two different themes. The secondary part of the 'roses' theme reminds me more of "Les mondes engloutis" actually.

    Luckily the score is more than just the main title. Also give tracks such as "Ballade en Irlande" a try. It's entirely different from anything from "Les Aventures de David Balfour". It's so good-natured and innocent, it's difficult not to like it. The secondary theme, "Solitude d'Anthony" is certainly beautiful and has a Morricone sound to it. "Amour paternel" has the same melody, but this variation is even more charming. "Incertitude de spring" is a mysterious, but entirely listenable version of the main theme. And the upbeat "Amour et deltaplane" version of the main theme is impossible not to like as well.

    First ever listen. And long overdue too !!! It's the incredibly thematic and hypnotic Kilar that will be forever remembered for his gorgeous melodies. Loving this already.

    I seem to have the Polish version, everything in polish, from the covers to the booklet inside. Needless to say I don't understand jack of it, but the music is all that needs to be understood, which is sublime !!! Luckily Jon Broxton's review has the translated track titles. smile

    Man, this release is too short. sad
    I'm not mad about the electronic and rather introspective Wind it is coupled with, but this score makes the whole CD MORE than worthwhile. What a marvellous theme (oddly reminiscent of Young's later The Shipping News, probably due to the folksy feel), and beautiful, robust orchestration.

    Truly, Poledouris was the master of the power anthem. He builds his themes and melodies in such a way that I could not but help liken it to Phil Spector's Wall Of Sound. It just builds in both intensity and emotion until it is as solid as a rock.

    Damn.
    I miss his type of scoring.

    It's not a perfect score. But it has so many elements I love...

    From the futuristic sound , to the tribal and ethnic elements. From the newage-minblowing stuff to the agressive action tracks.

    The main theme is fantastic. It's simple (almost in a Media ventures fashion), but you almost can feel the sense of joy of jack's character with his new legs.

    The only real complaintment is the 4 notes danger motif. Not beucase is thie "infamous" motif, but because it is used as " 4 notes dramatic motif" and it doesn't work. (specially in the movie, wich sounds in the most dramatic moments in the climax of the movie).

    How i said, the first 6 tracks are sublime.

    This has some very good moments. It also has a lot of tracks that I hardly notice if I'm not paying attention. I'll look up from what I'm doing and 5 tracks have gone by...

    A Whale For The Killing is a lovely score that immediately grabbed me from the first listen, in fact I think I played it three times in a row. You're so right about it being too darn short.

    Mine is Polish too, as far as I know there wasn't any other version....was there??

  13. Transformers (Steve Jablonsky)

    Hugely enjoyable... the modern film score sound is alive and well in this one. Wonder what it would sound like if this music were orchestral originally? dizzy

    I enjoy this one too, but I wouldn't pick this one as an example of "alive and well" modern film scoring. Not by a long shot. I'd choose a Bourne score, or maybe a Giacchino score... but not Transformers. It's basically a 90s Bruckheimer score with a slight modern twist.
  15. I get what you're saying, but then I prefer that 90s approach to the 00s approach. I could never get into the Bourne's even if I wanted to.

    Love it. It's back from the time than Brian Tyler scores actually rocked wink The inama mushif song is heartbreaking material, very beautiful.

    Transformers is brain-dead fun. But it's LOTS of fun. Still, not an example to generalize on what a modern score is. If i had to, i'd choose something by the guys who are pioneering the area as we speak, doing their thing which is actually different and has a pretty unique voice. Like Bear McCreary, or Giacchino. Or Rombi and Desplat.

    NP : In Concert (Barcelona) - Elmer Bernstein

    What's not to like about this one ?!
    So many great themes - The Great Escape , The Magnificent Seven , Taarna's Theme (from "Heavy Metal") ,
    The Sons Of Katie Elder , The Ten Commandments etc ... and all played live !
    Great stuff from maestro Bernstein !
