  1. 1973 - Défense de Savoir - Bruno Nicolai

There were raised eyebrows from some quarters for the oversight of me not choosing Morricone's Questa Specie D'amore as last year's choice. Something to do with overlooking all those wonderful themes!

It's the themes that decided this second Nicolai title for my list. "Thème de Juliette" is such a beautiful theme (definitely in the mode of the better known Morricone) - a lovely melody indeed. Tracks such as "Sans Espoir" and "L'accusée" balances the lyrical main theme with more hard-edged and rhythmic tracks. The score does sag a bit in the middle with some more suspense/soundscape tracks - which is why people interested in this title should hunt out the expanded Digitmovies release rather than the regular CAM release. The Digitmovies CD double the track number and features variations on the main thematic and action tracks rather than duplicating the saggy middle cues.

I know that I'll be taken to task for choosing this title over the likes of Papillon and maybe even One Little Indian (both Jerry Goldsmith). I'll leave it to Tom to argue my case further!

Other titles for 1973 certainly had some outstanding themes - Enter The Dragon, Serpico, Live and Let Die and even Westworld's gunslinger theme or Schifrin's reuse of themes for Magnum Force - but Nicolai's score just has more.

TV shows also threw up some excellent themes this year - Barry Gray's Space: 1999, Kojak (Billy Goldenberg), The Tomorrow People (Dudley Simpson) and even Ronnie Hazlehurst's theme for Some Mothers Do Have 'Em.

Can you remember what you chose last time Alan? ( i sort of vaguely remember Westworld? )

I don't know the Nicholai score so my choice, without a doubt, would have been PAPILLON.

Very interesting choice, Alan! It's great that a little known composer such as Nicolai gets some well-deserved attention in this thread.

About the "Thème de Juliette" sounding like Morricone, that's definitely true, mostly because the theme is a rip-off of Morricone's well-known "Chi mai" theme. Morricone and Nicolai's had a huge falling out in '73, and it's possibly due to this very theme. Two long time friends and collaborators, and their relationship was destroyed so badly that Morricone didn't even attend Nicolai's funeral 18 years later.

My choice for '73 is a tie between the three Morricone scores Il mio nome e' Nessuno/Revolver/Sepolta viva. Papillon is great too though and and honorable mention goes to the porn score The devil in Miss Jones by unknown dude Alden Shuman. Yep, a porn score, but utterly delightful.

It may well have been Westworld - I can check when I get home later. I do just love that gunslinger theme Karlin composed for Yul Brinner's character.

BTW, I couldn't help but think of Yul's gunslinger when we were watching The Magnificent Seven the other day.

Thanks Peter for the additional information on Morricone/Nicolai. I've not heard of any of the Morricone titles you mentioned. And, obviously, I've neither seen nor heard the works of Shuman.

Il mio nome e' Nessuno is italian for My name is Nobody. I'm sure you've heard about it before under its english title. It's well worth checking out. Here're tracks from My name is Nobody, Revolver and one of Sepolta viva.

That's not an accident: it's well documented that the Westworld Gunslinger was very intentionally modelled after Brynner's character in The Magnificent Seven. Though whether that was meant as a pastiche or an hommage I do not know.

I wish I could comment a little bit on your choice for 1973...but I haven't even ever heard of the score shame
For what it's worth my pick would have been Rogier van Otterloo's excellent work on the Dutch film Turks Fruit ("Turkish Delight'') ...but as Toots Thielemans is harmonica'ing and whistling his heart out on that score, and I know you thoroughly dislike that, I'm not surprised you didn't pick it (even though I know you do have it! wink )

Runners-up would be George Martin's thoroughly fun Live And Let Die and Michael Lewis' pomp-&-gothic Theatre Of Blood.

That said, I shall keep an eye out for Défense De Savoir, which sound like something I might like a lot!

I am grateful that you gave me the Turks Fruit CD Martijn. Honest, I am!! It certainly allowed me to listen to more of the score than features on the 3-CD "Verzameld Werk" set. (And, to this day, these two titles amount to my total van Otterloo experience!

Interesting choice, Alan. I hadn't even heard of it before (but then again, I've heard very little Nicolai in the first place).

Not to ressurect the ol' "score" debate again, but there were some films that year that used existing music in a terrific way. AMERICAN GRAFFITI, THE EXORCIST, BADLANDS, for example. Or that used original music in a very original way (THE LONG GOODBYE, LAST TANGO IN PARIS).

But ultimately, it would be a toss-up between Rota's AMARCORD and Goldsmith's PAPILLON. I think I'll go with PAPILLON.
    I am extremely serious.

My top 1973 is also Theatre of Blood (thanks Martin for acknowledging Michael J. Lewis with me!!!).

Goldsmith was indeed in good form that year with the titles mentioned so far, however no one's mentioned Ace Eli and Rodger of the Skies yet, have they? I practically like it on-par with Papillon.

My "Best Original Song" award goes to Morricone's "Un amico" from Revolver.

    My favorites of 1973:

Rogier van Otterloo - Turks Fruit
    Nino Rota - Amarcord
    Ennio Morricone - Revolver
Vladimir Cosma - Les Aventures de Rabbi Jacob (a classic!)

  4. It is certainly a time of change at the moment. But the biggest reason for me not updating my list at the moment is I have a splitting headache from an afternoon/evening in the pub yesterday. Starting off at lunchtime with a 5.5-6.0% porter may not have been a good place to start so early. But, moving on to a lighter ale - Cheshire Cat - helped.

But then I discovered the bar had Talisker's Distillers Choice... lick

Thanks for the concern but I don't think you need to worry. 8+ hours of social drinking once every few years (yes, it's that infrequently in my case) isn't a problem.

Though, the first step on the road to recovery is admitting you have a problem...

What will Alan's choice for 1974 be?

IT'S ALIVE is my bet. biggrin wink

Personally I would plump for Henry Mancini's The White Dawn, Michel Legrand's The Three Musketeers, David Shire's The Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3, Nino Rota's The Godfater Part II and Jerry Goldsmith's Chinatown.

I've never much cared for John Williams The Towering Inferno beyond the magnificent theme.

  7. This may be the jolt I need to get back into this again. Things haven't yet settled down here in terms of day-to-day running. And with all the upheaval things like this have taken a bit of a back seat. And with the new PCs there's a lot of sorting out I need to do to get things back to the way they were before in terms of the structure of my music library - and trying to get back the wma tracks that I bought when I first began buying tracks online and not realising how bad DRM was!!

And we are off to Skye for 2 weeks at the weekend so things will again be a bit slow.

I'll try and get 1974 posted by the end of the week. But I can't promise anything...
