NP: Salt - James Newton Howard

It goes from the bizarre and quite awful to the downright brilliant several times throughout. Cut it down to the big action pieces and it's a very exciting listen!

'Chase Across DC' is a really good action cue. I don't remember anything else.

    Pfffffffff...it's synthetic as hell.

NP: Battlestar Galactica: Season 3 - Bear McCreary

I was at first dismissive of Richard Gibbs and Bear McCreary's approach to scoring this series...

I'm dismissive of Gibbs' music, I think it's awful. Not McCreary's though!

If you are looking for TV scoring at its absolutely finest I don't think you will find a more engaging or satisfying score than Battlestar Galactica: Season 3.

I think Season 4 is equally as good -if not better?- on album.

Very enjoyable in places. Nothing truly life changing, but a pleasant surprise.

I guess that this is JNH's take on the Bourne score... "Chase across DC" has a really nice mid-90s JNH feel, but crossed with contemporary Bourne sound, creating something else that's quite enjoyable.

I'm listening to this Right Now, and sorry, man, "synthetic" is not the first thing that I would have ever come up with for this track.

    Inception Hans Zimmer

Worked pretty much perfectly in the film, the only problem -as Erik mentioned I think?- is there's just too much of it in the film. Less definitely would have been more (I think it would have worked better if there was little-to-no music in the real world, and leave all the music in the dream worlds, makes sense to me?)

The album is a very good representation of the whole score, I certainly didn't notice anything significant missing when I saw the film.

Good stuff! (And the film is amazing.)

NP: On The Beach - Christopher Gordon

The militaristic renditions of the theme as heard for example in "Prepare to Dive" is a perfect example of what I love most about film music. Breathtakingly epic and noble.

is Zimmer abandoning the idea of full-bodied themes because he doesn't think he can ever write anything this good?

Can anyone who knows which section I'm referring to tell me if there's anything in classical music similar to this?
