I saw THE HAPPENING last weekend, and there are too many intentionally comic beats (and unintentional!) for that to be considered a complete failure. A failure of marketing, maybe, for pushing the wrong idea of the film?

Yeah. The opening scenes are as funny as the ones from The Final Destination, but I still stand by my opinion.

It's a shame that shit like The Last Airbender movie is being mentioned in the same breath as Dragon Ball * .

DB is a great series. Lots of heart and fun. Any fan of anime could get into it. DBZ and DBGT, however, are wholly different animals, with DBZ being much better than DBGT.

Yes, but I have waited so long for a movie where the characters could shot balls of energy...

I have been waiting for this kind of "figths" since the first Street Fighter movie came up .

I understand. One of the reason why I love the final fight between Neo and Agent Smith in Matrix Revolution, was how similar it was to DBZ.

this score is so AVERAGE and GENERIC that makes superb his Rambo score.
  1. Trevor Jones - Chaos

Trevor Jones doing Harry Gregson-Williams better than Harry Gregson-Williams does himself. Quite cool work, works nicely in the movie, great themes, some electronica. Not a masterpiece, but a cool score.

NP: Starcraft II: Wings Of Liberty - Derek Duke / Glen Stafford / Neal Acree / Russell Brower

What a fascinating score. I have no idea what this game is about (going to look it up right now) so I have now idea why there is such a varied mix of styles... but you know what... none of it is jarring. It jumps from heroic symphonic themes, to twangy western guitars to head banging thrash metal.... but all of it is done soooo well. A most enjoyable disc!

    NP:The last Airbender (newton Howard)

It was an irregular album before watching the movie. Now it's an impresive mix of Shaymalan's serious mood and the action and adventure of this kind of movies.

I really love this mystical moments with flutes and tibetan bells.

5 stars all the way!!!! A swashbuckling action adventure score brimming with fantastic and memorable themes. If you find this high flying score... the promo is very, very rare and ridiculously expensive... then I highly recommend you pick it up... for a reasonable price. You will NOT be disappointed!

    -Erik-

If it's a promo, then free is the only reasonable price. Took me all of 10 seconds to find a download link, so I'll give it a listen. smile

    Who's this guy?

Get his score to "The Stupids".

It's a large orchestra work, properly overblown, large, got a theme, and it's just compliments the incredible stupidity of the main characters so well.

You'll hear it and wonder why his career never took off.
The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else.

Was: O Pioneers - Bruce Broughton

Softer than his two most famous western scores, but just as enjoyable.

Now: Homeward Bound - Bruce Broughton

Nice theme, some slightly unfocussed Mickey Mousing, but a strong album overall.

39 seconds into the second track, 'Carl and Alexandra', appears the same first 11 notes of the Pirates of the Caribbean theme (purely coincidental I'm sure: I seriously doubt Zimmer found inspiration in Broughton's O Pioneers for his theme). And not trying to make point, I just thought it was a funny similarity.

The main theme is a lovely piece of music.

NP : HORROR FILM THEMES - Various Artists

A great 2 CD set from Silva Screen, a combination of originals and covers, some good...The Fog, Halloween, some bad...The Thing, Halloween II, but it's not the usual assortment of horror themes that draws me to this, it's the suites and themes from lesser known works from the likes of Humphrey Searle's The Haunting and The Abominable Snowman, David Whataker's Vampire Circus, Benjamin Frankel's Curse of The Werewolf, Gerard Shermann's Horrors of The Black Museum and James Bernard's Dracula, Nosferatu, Kiss of The Vampire, The Devil Rides Out and my favourite piece by him, 'Christine' from Frankenstein Created Women.

I've decided to play Chamber of Secrets as well. Superb score! Too bad that the Chamber of Secrets theme was pretty much cut entirely from the film.

Matt - I'm with you on Phoenix's theme. Breathtaking... and it's heroic use during "Dueling the Basilisk" is magnificent! The action material in this score reminds me so much of Williams' frenetic writing for Temple of Doom.

I love the re-working of Harry's Wondrous World with its more triumphant ending!

And while I'm not a huge fan of Simon Rhodes' cavernous style of recording but it works for this score... especially in the horn section... they sound MASSIVE!

It's a testament to just how good the first and third scores are that the second is marginally the weakest.

Odd how the Star Wars prequel scores follow a similiar path to the Potter scores: the first one is the most 'traditional' Williams score, the second one is perhaps more than marginally for the latter case the weakest but with an excellent new theme, and the third the darkest and perhaps the most unique.

I think the term is implicitly derogatory in our circles.
If the music in question was being enjoyed by the person calling it "mickey-mousing", I suspect they'd use a completely different term to describe it...like, energetically joyful symphonic bliss?
