I don't think The Phantom is oustanding as such, but it is exceptionally entertaining and my favourite David Newman score.

Its strength is its theme. That's what's amazing. The rest is also very good though, I think.

It's a fantastic theme. Justin, I could rip this at 96bps and put it on a CDR for you if you'd like.

The first 6 cues are f__king incredible! Some of the most impressive bits of action I've heard in a comic book film. And that's not taking away anything from the superb middle portions. And that finale cue is a show stopper! 9 minutes of film music goodness! What is there not to like?

But Erik, he can tell the difference between 320kbps MP3s and CD audio, don't you think we should give him the benefit of the doubt?

    Why would I want 96bps on a CD-R when I have a CD?

(which I've said twice, in this thread and another)

After this CD is over, I am going back to "Rich In Love" (Delerue). I STILL am encouraging any of you out there that don't have it: get it.

Justin believes he can hear the difference between high bit rates and pure CD audio/FLAC/WAV (he can't), and thusly refuses to embrace 21st century technology. There's a number of reasons why he might have thought that he could hear the difference, and there's a 99.9% chance that none of them relates to actually being able to hear the difference! biggrin (Unless he inadvertently listened to a 128kbps file or lower and figured that's what all MP3s sound like, not to mention the placebo effect on knowing beforehand what type of audio you're listening to.)

Audiophiles do often admit to hearing the difference (and these are proper, nerdy audiophiles... more than you, me or anyone else on this forum put together), but they're either a) lying, b) think they can but in fact can't, c) have extremely good set ups or d) have the ears of Superman. I would hazard a guess that it's mostly a case of b and c.

Even if one can hear the difference, it's so insubstantial and insignificant that it borders on insanity to refuse to listen to even high bit rate MP3s.

It's a little odd, to say the least.

I think he also believes that CDs have magical abilities to improve sound. (That is an MP3 on a CDR sounds better than an MP3 on an MP3 player, which of course depends on whether the set up for the CD player is better than listening to the MP3 player through headphones. Numerous factors to consider with audio quality!)

    So, yeah... odd.

    Project X - James Horner

A pity about the blatant Blue Max lifts and the few moments of cheesy 80s synths, because much of this is very good.

    NP: Batman - Danny Elfman

It's great to hear the expanded edition even though some of the elements weren't in pristine shape... the main title suffers greatly from this but at least I now have the film version with the pumped up percussion. There are few other minor quibbles... for example tracks fading out (I've read that there was no clean out for the Batwing I cue) and pinchy sound... but overall it's great to hear all of Elfman's masterpiece as a stand alone listen. There are also a lot of interesting bonus cues and alternate arrangements... "Batman To The Rescue (Original Ending)" and the film edit of "Charge of the Batmobile" are AWESOME!!!

    Just revisited the movie.
It remains my favourite Pixar. It's incredibly (hee!) witty and entertaining.
And Giacchino's score is -to my mind- his finest to date!

Actually, I'll be fickle and stick to my original opinion of the score.

The Incredibles is definitely the coolest score he's done, but Ratatouille is by far the most charming. And charming scores always win me over!

The Incredibles is also my favourite Pixar movie. I return to the score much more than Ratatouille, although the rat one should had one the Oscar. Up is good but a bit pale in comparison to these two.
