    Stargate
While it is a precursor to his tour de force of Independence Day, Stagate is a very enjoyable score through its big bold main title, rip-roaring action and choral majesty. While I only have the Milan version, it's quite enough for me.

    A League of Their Own
It's my favourite Hans Zimmer score because it's the least Hans Zimmer sounding score. Rousing big band jazz coupled with Zimmer's knack of early 1990s dramas are a winning combination in this score. This score should really be released in full one day.

    Papillon
While not a favourite Goldsmith of mine, it's still pretty good. The best part is the best main theme which is an expressive lyrical line which illustrates the protagonists wanting to escape prison and return to France. The Oscar nomination here was richly deserved.

    Jurassic Park
I previously thought this score was over-praised for what it actually was, but I will reverse that position after listening to it today for the first time in a while. Jurassic Park musically has all the style of everything that we've grown accustomed to hearing in a Williams score; big themes, action music and dramatic writing.

    Sinbad:Legend of the Seven Seas
One of the better scores that Harry Gregson Williams has produced. It is clearly in the vogue of what some people thought that Pirates of the Caribbean might sound like. It is a more rewarding listening experience through its mixing of 2000 Media Venture animation scoring with old fashioned swashbuckling tendencies.

    The Stoning of Soraya M
In probably the most basic terms, this score is a more subtle Passion of the Christ. But that doesn't mean that it's bad or a rip off of POTC (Whoa, I just noticed that!). The album certainly takes its time to envelope you with its ethnic flavour and subtle dramatic writing.

NP: Mission Impossible - Danny Elfman

MG's score is great, Hans Zimmer's not so, but Elfman's is definitely the best sounding. cool

Hans Zimmer's score is a blast. I find it way more entertaining than Elfman's or Giacchino's, with some excellent and varied highlights.

I'm open to conversion though. What are some tracks from MI1 and MI3 I might like (keeping in mind that I'm not much into action music, unless it has a strong theme)?

I can't remember the titles of individual tracks, what stood out was the horrible MOR rock sound, I've also had the gross misfortune to have seen the film.

The film isn't too great. The soundtrack has more than rock though. "Injection" is a song ala "Now we are free", but I personally prefer "Injection". "Nyah and Ethan" is low key latino acoustic guitar playing.

I do like the rock tracks too. "Bare island" is loads of fun. I think the key to liking it, is to not take it seriously. Just enjoy it for the unintellectual, but pure headbanging fun that it is.

I love Elfman's score for that film. One of his top 2 or 3 scores for me. (Sommersby and Standard Operating Procedure also rank up there for me, with the three early classics, Black Beauty, Batman and Scissorhands not far behind.)

You and I both share almost completely identical views here. I've yet to hear the first two titles in (), but I assume I'll probably like them since our views intertwine.

Might I suggest to you, if you have not heard them, to seek out:

"Anywhee But here" (sadly, only a suite, but it's like seven or eight minutes long)

    "Amazing Stories: Family Dog"
Only two cues, on one of the Music for A Darkened theater volumes; the master tapes could not be found to have the whole thing for the Intrada compilations.
Also, check out that episode -- it's great comedic stuff, and some nifty quotes, plus -- you get to hear the rest of what I consider to be one of Elfman's best scores.

Just as soon as I can get to a computer with earphones, I'll check out "Sommersby" and "Standard Operating Procedure".

  2. Born on the Fourth of July - John Williams

Williams' knack for amazing string writing is exemplified manifold here.

Out of interest, why are you suggesting these? Neither of them is anything like any of the Elfman scores Franz has said are his favourites.

So, you're recommending Anywhee But here (sic) because it's only a suite, and Family Dog because the masters could not be found? Or was there any other reason for your recommendation beyond what you already stated?
  4. If reading it again (assuming you did) didn't help -- I don't know what to tell you. I'm not going to lead you by the nose like a child.

So, you must not have anything else to do then, right?

NP: Alien Invasion: Space and Beyond, Vol. 2 - Various Artists

IMHO, one of the finest compilations produced by Silva Screen Records and The City of Prague Philharmonic. A well thought out selection of scores featuring marvelous performances and excellent sound quality (that's saying a lot for the Prague Orchestra back then.) This 2CD set introduced me to so many film scores I wasn't familiar with; When Worlds Collide, Battle Beyond The Stars, Dune, Thing From Another World, the original War of the Worlds, Space: Above & Beyond, etc. This album rarely left my CD player back in the day!

Sorry for being so thick but all I was asking for was why you were recommending those particular titles to him when they are nothing like any of the ones he says he liked. As far as I can see you haven't said anything about them apart from the first one being a suite, and the masters being lost for the second, which wouldn't really be enough of a recommendation for me to make a purchase. I was hoping you'd give a bit more explanation.

Trevor Jones doing Harry Gregson-Williams better than Harry Gregson-Williams does himself. Quite cool work, works nicely in the movie, great themes, some electronica. Not a masterpiece, but a cool score.

Yes yes yes, wholly agree! The movie was a bore but the score elevated it.

WP: The Twilight Saga: Eclipse - Howard Shore

I think I've been unfairly harsh towards this score. It does have the misfortune of having to try to reach the very high bar set by Desplat's contribution, and it can't possibly compete there, but I think its still quite a good score on its own merit. The themes are nice once you get to know them, and there's an interesting structural relationship going on between Jacob's Theme and what I would call Victoria's Theme, the one heard in the second half of the first cue and repeated several times throughout the album. The whole thing has definitely grown on me.

NP: The 3 Worlds of Gulliver - Bernard Herrmann (McNeely recording)

No matter how i tried, it's still one big missed opportunity and an uninspired score to me; the worst parts are the solo piano parts, sounding like written and performed by a conservatory piano student no older than 13 years of age.

Nothing grounbreaking but a very enjoyable score, I've returned to it from time to time.

I loved that, it's certainly nothing biggy and i didn't get into it at all when it was released, but over time i found that i really loved its Adrian Johnston / Marc McKenzie qualities; melancholic, romantic, string-driven and melodic.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  5. I actually liked the movie, to be honest. Maybe because of a rare twist with Wesley Snipes as a villain.

Just listened to the MI1 tracks. Thanks for the recommendations, but I didn't get any of them. I didn't notice any melody and it just seemed like random underscore to me. I'm sure this stuff works great as film music, but I don't get why anyone would listen to it away from the movie. The only part I liked was the short snippet of the Mission Impossible theme at the end of "Zoom B", as a few notes of an actual melody was a great relief after 30 minutes of randomness.

Wow! shocked You didn't like ANY of Elfman's variations of THE PLOT theme? What about its playful use in the BRILLIANT "Big Trouble" or its heroic use at the end of "Mole Hunt" I personally LOVE this type of sneaking around music... and Elfman's is really the only one to truly capture the sound of the original TV series. And his version of the M:I theme is the best I've heard. Even better than the original. Excellent score.

I don't know the score well enough to know what the plot theme is. I played the last minute of "Mole hunt" and heard some tension music and a brief fanfare. Not sure what I'm supposed to listen to there to be honest. I'm currently listening to "Big trouble" and not sure what the good part of it is, or when the plot theme is playing.

It sounds impressive, sure, and it's the kind of film music I love in movies; but on CD, I don't get any enjoyment out of it.

That said, it's possible that additional listens will warm me to it. It will never become a favourite though, as it doesn't appear to be my kind of film music.

    Robot Jox - Frederic Talgorn

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3W2UMCnqDw&feature=player_embedded

If you have a soft spot for B movie scores, then this one is for you. It is a brass dominated score with two wonderful themes (one being a western inspired romp somewhat reminiscent of The Cowboys, and the other being the humanity theme with a grand/lush string approach). The Paris Philharmonic Orchestra gives a very spirited performance to add to big bold sound of this robot fighting movie. But then again, this is a fair warning, if you don't like cheesy scores, stay away from this.

It's a shame that Talgorn doesn't get more work, because this score certainly shows that he can do a good job.

Hehe. Well I gave it a try. I just need strong and catchy melody, and when the music follows the onscreen action closely that's usually a turn off, as it ends up sounding random as an independent listening experience.

I'll give MI3 a listen later today. I might like that one more.
