It's a great action score. An interesting and creative mix of Powell meets Zimmer meets Howard's very own action voice. Howard frickin' nailed the perfect sound for this film. It's superb!

Airbender looses major points with me for the lack of thematic material. It didn't go above and beyond which is what I expect from a Howard/Shyamalan collaboration. Two or three really extraordinary cues and that's about it. The rest is rather empty.

While I don't completely agree that it's a "great" score. It's a very good one. One of the best action score from JNH in recent time.

I will admit that Airbender does lack a proper theme, but having given the Audacity editing treatment, plus rearranging the track order, I've managed to get it down to about 40 minutes - it plays MUCH better than the full album (IMO). So I'm basing my opinion of it on that particular version... and Salt really doesn't fare too well. Still, I like Salt too. But it has a stupid name.

I can see where you are coming from but if I have to spend my own time and effort to make a score listenable (not including a quick iTunes playlist) then the composer didn't do a very good job at 1) producing the soundtrack or 2) writing good music to begin with. Airbender's presentation is pants but even switching around a few cues or cutting some out doesn't help it's cause. What you have done probably helps with the listening experience to it... which makes up part of the overall grade... but if I have to cut out a majority of the score then how good can it really be overall?

As for Salt... I really enjoyed the album, which is obvious. It kept my attention nicely throughout its playing time so much so that I returned to it almost immediately and played it again. I can't wait to return to it tomorrow!

For me it does since I'm probably only ever going to listen to 'my version'. I think 40 minutes of "worthy" music is pretty good going! Even if the rest of the score isn't as good, that doesn't take anything away from those 40 minutes I've deemed worthy to listen to. I don't think a score should be criticized too heavily for not playing well in its entirety: even if a composer manages to create 10 or 20 minutes of awesome film music amongst 2 hours of score, I still think that's reason to celebrate. Even the original Star Wars scores tend to play better in 1 CD lengths.

I certainly agree the album could have been produced better (hence my edit).

As for Salt, I reckon I heard about 20-30 minutes of music I'd want to listen to again (if I'm in the mood). But even with that in mind, for me, those 20-30 minutes don't even begin to top those 40 minutes from Airbender.

If Salt even has a single theme it is much less obvious than the numerous Last Airbender themes that saturate every track! Why can people not acknowledge themes unless they are a certain number of notes and orchestrated in a certain way?

  1. I like that echoing two-note ostinato from Salt quite a lot, I must say.

    I love Airbender.

I personally don't care if Salt has any themes. I've said this before not every film score needs a theme but if there was ever a film that deserved the full bodied, lyrical, soaring, classic theme it was Airbender. That's why I'm so disappointed with it. Hiding motifs here and there... come on! Give me a break. It's a fantasy adventure film... give it an identity... give it a true THEME. Why do we love scores such as KRULL, STAR WARS, WILLOW, THE EXPLORERS, BEASTMASTER, CONAN, etc. so much? Yes, they are all very well written but they also have a hook... a true theme (or themes) that you can hold onto. It's all out there in the open! That's why you come back to them.

I don't even LIKE the main theme from Star Wars. It annoys me most of the time. And I find Krull's themes completely unmemorable. Conan, doesn't really have a main theme, just a bunch of different prominent melodies. Willow, sure, but it's Horner and that's his style.

I understand where you're coming from and I'm not saying you're wrong, I just don't feel the same about those scores. And it has nothing to do with their age. It's just that, for me, a lot of times when it comes to conveying emotion, less is more.

The Red Violin - very good score
The Black Stallion Returns - very good score
    The Holiday - good score
1492: Conquest of Paradise - laughable as a score but a decent album listen
    The Vanishing - Forgettable
Revenge is sweet... Revenge is best served cold... Revenge is ice cream.
  3. Gods and Monsters (Burwell)

Sometimes Burwell feels a bit murky to be enjoyable, but this score has *just* enough of that beautiful waltz theme to dispel all criticism.

Sure, it has themes... but nothing that stands out as a proper main theme - not to me anyway (even though it does have one).

The suite has what could have been the main theme (the bit -for lack of better explanatory skills- that sounds like Stargate), but why is it no where else in the score? I'd love to have heard that worked into the the rest of the score.

I tell you what score from this year does have a proper theme; How To Train Your Dragon! Still, all that said, I still enjoy Airbender immensely.

How can it possibly stand out any more than playing over the title of the film and then during every major plot point?

    Er, not at all?

It seems to be more of a musical bridge to the second film than a recap of the themes of the first film. The final scenes of the film ("Flow Like Water") are so musically climactic that I think it actually works better that way. Any more would have been over the top, overwhelming. Same thing with Lady in the Water, the final 10 minutes are so intense (at least musically!) that having the "Ripples in the Water" piece (which, similarly to Airbender, has little importance in the film itself) be the end credits works so much better than further epic-ness would have.

    Again, sometimes less is more.

don't listen to me, i'm ridiculously, inappropriately, irrationally biased towards this film

There seems to be an endless supply of new Horner material to discover! I have 35 of his scores and I haven't heard him do anything quite like this before (and yes, I know its a ripoff of classical music tongue)

Because M. Night Shyamalan is a soulmate of mine, and consequently I experience his films in a completely different way than "most" people. Beyond that, I don't know if I could successfully answer that question in less than 50,000 words... cool

Depends which theme you mean (and depends if you were replying to me!?). I was referring to the Stargate-like theme in the suite, I'd like to have heard more of that worked into the score. The main theme itself, or themes, are good I will happily admit... but none of them are given a "full blooded" workout, something that says "This, right here, is THE main theme - revel in its glory!" It gets close, but not quite close enough.

But even with that in mind, it's one of my favourites from this year because, even without the "full blooded" theme, it works extremely well. Especially my edited version. wink
