How can it possibly stand out any more than playing over the title of the film and then during every major plot point?

    Depends which theme you mean

This is what I don't understand...if a theme is played over the main title of a film it is usually considered the main theme automatically. No matter how "glorious" it happens to be. Unless of course you haven't seen the film...in which case my point is pointless.

Anyway, I bet you will hear the unused material from the suite a lot more in the second film, if it's made. I bet the Stargate-ish theme is for Ba Sing Se.

I haven't. But you're missing my point: I know what I'm listening is The Theme, but the theme itself, the music, to me doesn't quite reach the levels of what I look for in a main theme, particularly for a fantasy adventure score like this. That's my point, I'm not talking about the technical side of what is or what isn't a theme. I'm talking about the music itself.

Fair enough. I'm sure it all makes sense in the film.... but I won't be watching it anytime soon.

It's already more than made back its production budget and it hasn't even been released in all territories yet. It should easily break even. Which is probably more than can be said for the latest Bruckheimer and Ridley Scott releases.

They are more small motifs... short musical ideas that don't get fully realized... which seams to be just fine with some around here but is a sad and on going trend with directors and composers these days who seam to be scared to bloody death by full, lyrical themes.

I'd say they're a bit more than just small motifs, but I see your point.

NP: Mission Impossible - Danny Elfman

MG's score is great, Hans Zimmer's not so, but Elfman's is definitely the best sounding. cool

I heard Elfman wasn't too happy with how this turned out? I think it's probably my favourite score of his.

The same has been mentioned with Mansell's score to Sahara.
  1. Elfman wrote a really quick job (2-3 weeks) after replacing Alan Silvestri who did a really, REALLY bad job. I can imagine he's thinking he could have done it much better if he had more time. What I really like is how intelligent the writing is anyway. I assume he could have fleshed a theme out or two, but in general yeah, very intelligent spy writing, sometimes being a pastiche of the genre.

I am not a fan of MG's score. Zimmer's score is not great, but a very weird, but ultimately pure brainless piece of fun. I like to listen to it once in a while to purely turn my brain off. While I am a fan of Broken Arrow (sorry to me it's possibly BEST of Zimmer's mid-90s action scores or at least his most stylish of them all. The best FILM score of the lot is of course Crimson Tide, which really wonderfully works in the movie), the best John Woo score definitely remains Paycheck.

  2. I love Elfman's score for that film. One of his top 2 or 3 scores for me. (Sommersby and Standard Operating Procedure also rank up there for me, with the three early classics, Black Beauty, Batman and Scissorhands not far behind.)

I can see your point about themes, Erik. I found AIRBENDER a bit lackluster as a composition next to most of the other Shymalan scores, so the themes weren't really my first point of disappointment.

    NP Jerry Goldsmith

Does it ever happen to you that you can't stop playing music from a certain composer (I mean, DAYS playing ONLY his music)? If not, well, I'm afraid I am that weird, yes. Anyway, in an extreme Goldsmith mood these days.

NP: The Expendables - Brian Tyler

It's not bad. More orchestral than before, a bit chunky in sound, though not very meaty. The main theme is so so, but serviceable. It should work pretty well in the movie.

Happens to me quite a lot too. I love it, because it reminds me of why I love a particular composer!

I happen to be on a John Williams-fest at the moment. It's bloody marvelous. [/thickest English accent one can muster]

It's probably the first JNH-Shymalan score that isn't a very JNH-Shymalan-like score. But it's still a fine score, even if it doesn't quite reach the emotional and visceral heights of his previous scores for Shymalan.

Thanks to you, I can't listen to 'Flow Like Water' and not think of The Da Vinci Code! biggrin

Hans Zimmer's score is a blast. I find it way more entertaining than Elfman's or Giacchino's, with some excellent and varied highlights.

I'm open to conversion though. What are some tracks from MI1 and MI3 I might like (keeping in mind that I'm not much into action music, unless it has a strong theme)?
