NP: The Crow - Graeme Revell

My first listen. That string theme is good. Though it sounds like the only great thing about this score. Was the movie temp tracked with Peter Gabriel's score to The Last Temptation of Christ? I like that score, but, really?

What's wrong with Peter Gabriel's score?

There's nothing wrong with it. I said I like it. But it feels very awkward to be thinking about Jesus when listening to, and watching, The Crow.

500 DAYS OF SUMMER | mychael danna & Rob Simonson

    A promo. love

What a cute melodies this score throws around. I don't know who got the most in it, but a lot of the piano and woodwind sounds like Danna's style. It's lovely all the way.

As for the song cd, it contains some absolute cool one, especially the English band Mumma-Ra's with She's Got You High. punk Regina Spektor (what's in name, wtf) does a good job too.

And Carla Bruni's song is sweet and ... sexy!

    NP Apollo 13 (James Horner)

One of these scores I NEED TO return to very frequently. A period in which Horner couldn't fail. Impressive music.

NP: Antony and Cleopatra (John Scott)

If Scott contributed only one thing to film music, this would be more than enough. The stirring love theme, presented in a range of settings, and the delightful 'Egyptian Bacchanal' (complete with a clear flute reference to Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherezade) make it for me.

Thanks for the inspiration. I'm spinning this right now. I forgot I had it. shame What a delightful score!

It is. One of the greats. Apparently the film is a real turkey.

NP: Door in the Floor (Marcelo Zarvos)

Incredibly simple score, coming down to a basic progress that we here dozens of times. And yet it works for me, bringing back the story nicely. (If you haven't seen the film, it may just get boring.)

Man, that one is bad but at least the girl that plays Cleopatra can't stop wearing see through clothes. lick cool

Jazzy score with a melancholic overtone. The elements that I want are here, but I'm not sure if I like it.

I felt very much the same with my first few listens when it came out in 2002 (jesus, was it really that long ago!?), so I can understand where you're coming from. Having become more familiar with the score and the film since, it's one of my favourites, as well as the film itself.

There are many reasons why it works so well, but I think it fits the film in a way only John Williams is capable of. (Or at least very few other composers.)

Oh, the score works great in the movie. Really really well. Though I feel that it doesn't seem like a score that I could revisit time after time... The album arrangement, with various songs, helps immensely.

  4. Horner's Flying Horsemen music (thanks to Erik's show). This is a fabulous piece of music. I wish I didn't to pay so much to get it. Is there any chance of this ever getting an MP3 release or something?

    YMMV?
    You Must Mute Vehemently?
    Your Many Maniacal Variations?
    Yikes! More Media Ventures! ?

NP: The Virgin Queen - Martin Phipps & The Medieval Babes
As oOne of the many historical BBC (mini) series, this was relatively ignored (and rightly so, it's just not very good), but the score is wonderful. Rather anachronistic (as is a la mode these days), the mixing of modern-styled rhythmic devices, elegantly Romantic (and minimalistic!) compositions together with period instruments, effects and the beautiful semi-Renaissance vocal stylings of the Mediaeval babes makes this a thoroughly enjoyable album!

Highly recommended to those who enjoy Morris' The Tudors or the Flemish folk group Laïs.

Perhaps we should start using that to people who use acronyms. Sooner or later they'll understand how annoying it is to see an acronym that one doesn't know what means.
