NP: Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader - David Arnold

Not as good as I wanted it to be. You guys way over reacted on the Reepi Sheep track. I'm surprised no one noticed how the structure of "Duel" is inspired by the Jack Sparrow theme. (Actually, you guys might have noticed it but I didn't read about it, yet?). So far, the orchestral nature of the score reminds me of how good David Arnold can be, and that this score could end up being an underwhelming effort. We'll see (or, rather, hear).

NP: ANGELS IN AMERICA - THOMAS NEWMAN

One of my favourite scores from the last decade. Absolute fucking genius. Love it.

    cool

Excellent score, from start to finish.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

I noticed this in the samples but wasn't too bothered. At least it isn't a direct rip of a theme.

NP: Be With You - The Happening - James Newton Howard

I don't have time to listen to the entire score so I thought I should go straight to the best cue. Brilliant!
  1. Dinotopia - Trevor Jones

Wunderbar !!! Leave it to Jones to come up with the most enchanting sound and sweeping melodies for a TV series about dino's. This music effortlessly transports me to a world of magic and wonder, much like Williams did for Jurassic Park, but then without the scary aspect.

Are you reviewing this Tom? I'd like to know your opinion.

I have the 10-minute suite that the BBC Concert Orchestra (Gamba) did for Chandos and I was wondering if having the original tracks adds anything more (than just having the original tracks).

    I think so Alan.

    Yeah, I love that theme.

    NP: Some selections of Illarramendi:1995-2005.

I love this guy's music. It has a very lyrical sound (reminds me of James Horner without the danger motif) and he always writtes strong thematic material. His themes for El Hijo de la Novia, Luna de Avellaneda, Yoyes, Sin Fin, La Isla del Cangrejo and Tiempo de Tormenta are wonderful.

I don't know if dislike is the right word John, I enjoy it but I think it's the weakest of JG's Trek scores.

    Seconded.

The only time I left a theater from a Trek film viewing, and couldn't remember a lick of the score. Trying samples didn't help improve it any.

The bravado over the score at FSM had someone saying that you could tell how into it Goldsmith was in order to crank out what they call a wonderful underrated score. Really? It couldn't have been just another one of those aweful, lousey films he scored and tried to prop up musically where the film failed almost every place? I seriously doubt, after reading a number of Goldsmith interviews, and watching the LONG video one on Youtube, that he "enjoyed" this movie any.

Fair play Tim, to each his own! To me this is his best Next Generation score but it's definitely not up there with The original and 'The Final Frontier', which I've been enjoying immensely on the new La La Land release the last few days.

  6. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier Goldsmith

As with ‘The Edge’ I almost didn’t order this as I’ve always been satisfied with the original disc. (I’m as far from being a C&Cer as you can get without being a certain Norwegian) But like the LLL ‘The Edge’ it’s an absolute must and makes for a much better listen. There is so much fantastic new material here! You’ve got to get it Tim, it’s 5000 copies so I think you have some time.

I don't like it. There are some interesting ideas though... I do like the "Remus" theme heard in the open track and the full on theme for Shinzon in the end credits but the rest is below average uninspired Goldsmith action material that could have come from any number of Goldsmith's late 90's early 2000's action scores. And I know that Goldsmith was very ill while writing this score but I consider Nemesis to be one of THE worst Trek film scores.

He loved Star Trek and all the crew, and he loved working with Stuart Baird, so regardless of whether he liked the film or not, I'm sure he enjoyed working on the film. Remembering that he was going through chemo at the time it was written and recorded, I imagine it was a pretty nice distraction for him. I think there are strong themes in it and some strong action music. I do (on reflection) think it's the weakest of his Trek scores, but that's a relative thing; it's still very good as far as I'm concerned.

I like The Edge expanded very much, the score is more developed so to speak, and I know from my many viewings of the film Trek V expanded will be a much better listen as well, besides it's from a time of Goldsmith sound I really love. So I will definitely order this before the year ends. beer

    Was playing:

    Amalia - Nuno Malo

Spectacularly good! Lush, romantic, thematic. Reminds me of latter-day Morricone.

    Now playing:

    Tron Legacy - Daft Punk

Love this too. If someone had told me at the start of the year that two of my favourite 2010 scores would be by Hans Zimmer and Daft Punk, I'd have suggested they should be on some kind of medication.

And it gets better and better after every listening. What a (pleasant) surprise. Can't wait to watch the film.
