Quite surprised with this relatively recent title. More used to seeing a "classic" title. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

"Thirteen Days"
(Trevor Jones)
2CD
Finally giving this score the shot I should have years ago.
Boring. Not a single cue to be taken with. Standard fare, no thrills, no strong or memorable theme, score.
Considering the film it was written for, I feel this was a DEEPLY missed oppritunity. Someone like Goldsmith or Poledouris could have done the film some proper justice. And at tiems it felt the scoring was just "wrong" for the film, too.
This goes into the heap of "Never Play Again".
That's a shame. I think the main theme is pure Trevor Jones bliss; a sweeping theme like only TJ can make 'em, and some of the action music kicks incredibly much buttock (particularly "There can be no deals"). I don't have the 2CD album though, but I think you're missing out if you never want to listen to the music again.
Peter
It's strange, I consider myself a fan of the man's writing, but somehow I think this isn't one of his better efforts. The album itself is filled with too much 'filler music' and the action music of Dark City was much more ferocious and interesting. I bought this just recently but now I'm thinking about selling it again. Give me something like Cleopatra and Dinotopia any day of the week, Thirteen Days I'll likely spin once every two years, or maybe not that often."considering I've seen an enormous debate here about The Amazing Spider-Man and the ones who love it, and the ones who hate it, I feel myself obliged to say: TASTE DIFFERS, DEAL WITH IT" - Thomas G. -

Forget World of Warcraft, which died a slow death after such a promising start, Castlevania: Lord of Shadows is a true epic adventure score from start to finish! My favorite video game score of the year right here!

I believe I may have said the same as your last comment on this score a few weeks back.
It really is a powerhouse game score! Best of the year for sure! -

I personally find "There can be no deals" more exciting than anything from "Dark city". Jones reuses some action material from his earlier scores though (for instance from "Merlin" and "Dark city"), but personally that doesn't detract me. I still find it the single most enjoyable action track Jones has ever produced.
It's true that there's filler, but I find the filler engaging throughout the album. I never find myself bored. There's alot of tension and drama in the music, even though it's not always overtly stated.
I personally prefer the theme to Cleopatra as well, but that's an unfair comparison since Cleopatra kicks way too much buttock for a fair comparison. That said, the theme heard in "Lessons of history", "Prayer for peace" and "The will of good men" I find breathtakingly beautiful. When Trevor Jones makes his sweeping themes he manage to create a sound unlike any other composer, and this theme is just bona fide Trevor Jones.
Peter
PS. Do me a favour. Play "There can be no deals", turn the volume way up, close your eyes and enjoy.
PPS. Oh and the do same with "Lessons of history". That's an amazing piece as well, though you might have to play it a few times before you realize just how fantastic it is. -

I recall there being only one cue that lifts from the "Dark City" action material, and about three or four that lightly sound like motifs/playing style from DC.
"Dinotopia" didn't float my boat either. I seem to recall poor immitation of Horner, and possibly some failing J.N.H. styling.
I know one MMUK member goes fucking banana nuts over it, but I can't see my way into listening to it again.
I'm hoping "Cleopatra" is better. The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else. -

NP: Chronicles of Narnia 3 (David Arnold)
Oh man...after an amazing start, with HGW theme with Nicholad dodd orchestrations included, then becomes sooooo dull....
Even Arnold copy and paste (In horner way) his love theme from Godzilla.
What is happening this year??? where Darft Punk has done the best score of the year by far???
The 11 minutes track is not very good, but at least is epic and noisy. -

Dinotopia is one of this score that isn't done anymore. But leaving some themes aside, it's too descriptve for me. Merlin has really long annoying sections. Cleopatra is my favourite, with a memorable main theme, great new age tracks and old fashioned marches and fanfarres. I love that one! -

Indeed, "There can be no deals" uses material from "Dark city". I think it comes great together in that cue though so it doesn't bother me.
About "Dinotopia", it's a good score, but nothing special. The theme is ok, but it doesn't hold a candle to the theme from "Thirteen days".

I really don't know how does this man do it; release so many scores which all have something to say; i found deep interest in all of his works this year, including Harry Potter and of course this small, elegant and string-driven beautiful gem. Can't wait to observe its functions within the movie.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

The Chronicles of Narnia - The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader - David Arnold
First listen, not good. The theme is not so great, Gregson's theme is much better and I'm glad he used it, boring underscore, the battle music isn't as exciting as I hoped.

The Fellowship of the Ring - Howard Shore
Wow! This is pretty good! Some nice themes, a vivid use of choir and solo performers. I never knew this Shore guy could write anything decent.
But the action music is so weak... it's so boring and repetitive, like RC does, only with orchestra. And I have a hard time connecting to the music because it has no emotional core whatsoever. Like when that boy soprano attempts to sing I actually felt the urge to vomit.
And why use the power of a choir if you're not going to go all out epic?
Has anyone on this planet seen the film? Because I really wonder how this score will work? Honestly, I can't see this low-budget fantasy thingie ever getting legendary status, based on the music alone.
I'll have to pick it up when it's released on VHS to get a sense of it all."considering I've seen an enormous debate here about The Amazing Spider-Man and the ones who love it, and the ones who hate it, I feel myself obliged to say: TASTE DIFFERS, DEAL WITH IT" - Thomas G. -

Much smoother and better than the second Arthur, but it doesn't come close to the first one though, which is still a fantastic surprise.

NP: Daybreakers - Christopher Gordon
Revisiting this for the first time in about 6 months and it's just as strong as when I first heard the score in January. This is one of the smartest and freshest horror scores I've heard in a long while. And it's very interesting to hear Gordon's utilizing his Rugby World Cup percussion and rhythms in this score. The orchestral climax heard during "Spread the Cure" is exactly what we rarely hear in these kinds of movies. Well done Mr. Gordon. This will rank somewhere in the middle of my Top 10 of 2010 pack.
