The reason I do is that it's a bit quieter and more contemplative than Khan, while still maintaining some of the bombast of its predecessor.

I absolutely love the 'mystic' elements of the score ( Katra Ritual etc ) just as much as I love the full-on tracks such as Stealing The Enterprise.

Absolutely amazing; one of the best scores of the year; modern, crisp, vivid, to the point.

    ALAN MENKEN - tangled

Thanks to Erik for pointing which were the score cues; i know you think i am lazy but believe me, i died of saccharine attack midway by the songs and stopped, threw it away before ever reaching to the score.

Now, apart some fluffy adventurous cues around no.9 (which are very well-composed and performed, but not my style), the rest of the score is filled with gorgeous and melodic symphonic GOLD (listen to " The Tear Heals", it's stunning in a word). Also Return to Mother is strong candidate for the most beautiful cue i've heard this year. An excellent composition all in all, congrats to Menken.

Add the previously unreleased material to those to increase my enjoyment and adoration of it. smile

  6. Tonight while working on my paper I've listened to a couple scores for the first time.

The Luzhin Defence - Alexandre Desplat. This score sounded quite nice and pleasant at the outset. It gets more sad by the end. It had some very nice music in it that I look forward to getting to know better on subsequent listens.

The Horse Whisperer - Thomas Newman. This is pretty typical orchestral Newman, which is a good thing in my book. It has a lot of shorter cues, a lot of them passing right by without my even noticing a track change. It also has several highlight cues full of big thematic orchestral Newmany goodness.

NP: Tron Legacy - Daft Punk

    I love this score!
But why? There's no doubt about the influence of Zimmer and his team here.
There are strong musical leanings towards The Dark Knight, Inception etc.
Would much of this score be "dissed" if it were written by Zimmer, Gregson Williams or Two Steps From Hell?
Maybe it's the obvious voice of the two daft punks which permeates so much of the album that makes it sound fresh and so damn catchy?!
Either way people view this album, it works! And it's a guilty pleasure that I continue to return to!

Luzhin is pretty great. I love the "Love Theme" and "The Dark Side of Chess". It's like a complement to James Horner's score for A Beautiful Mind.

    FAIR GAME - John Powell

A cross between United 93 and Stop Loss, but ultimately very effective in the movie. It escorts subtly, never intruding and only coming in the front when underlining the emotional scenes with a very discreet yet sentimental theme based on repeated 3-note descending lines. Those very scenes especially were scored with respect to the strong material of the movie and effectiveness.

    UNSTOPPABLE - Harry Gregson Williams

Standard HGW score for Tony Scott but missing the flair and emotion SPY GAME / MAN ON FIRE had and which made those 2 actually pretty good scores. When in calmer mood, the pieces are listenable and perhaps enjoyable to the followers of the composer; but when he goes into suspense mode, the music is loud, noisy, messy and seems pointless. Vivid contrast to the side he showcased with his brilliant PRINCE OF PERSIA score this year.

  8. THE BIG PICTURE - COMPILATION

Snow, ice and cold don't do anything to me because this CD leaves me hot, stunned and ecstatic! beer

Wonderful versions of the following: Batman Forever, Apollo 13, Crimson Tide, Independence Day, Braveheart, Cutthroat Island, Twister, The Last of the Mohicans, Dragonheart, Stargate, Jumanji and Gettysburg.

Can I have some more ? punk punk

Well, unlike Pelham, this score in action music is actually harmonically pleasant.

Is it? I'll have to re-listen another time when i'm in another mood 'cause it gave me headache (coupled with Powell's noise-fest for Green Zone)

  10. Yeah, Unstoppable is rather harmonious for all the time.

Actually since Metal Gear Solid 4, I don't take Harry Gregson-Williams as a film composer too seriously, I love what he does for games though.

The reason I ask I guess is because this score is being praised almost universally including known Zimmer / Remote Control bashers. Yet they like this work which is often made of the same musical ilk.
Just a curious thing I guess.
