  1. "The Perez Family"
    (Alan Silvestri)

After listening to the whole thing again yesterday (no official release), I found I have a new opinion on it: I would call it one of his absloute best secondary scores (not bad, but no "Predator" or "Holy Man", for example).

The strings, latin-like(?) percussion movements, the spanish trumpet(?), all comes together very nicely, and he gives the themes wonderful orchestration.

One theme is a rip off of something else, but for the life of me I can't tell what; he just just a couple notes or three. I think it's from a Goldsmith score, but I can't quite pin it down, but another part of me says it might be from "In Search of Peace".

Certainly needs a release. I can't help but also wonder what Zbiganew Preisner's rejected score is like.

    Would anybody fancy a suite?

NP : LIFEFORCE - Henry Mancini

What a score! Fabulous marching main theme and a wonderfully nebulous score that ebbs and flows with lovely time signature changes and great orchestrations, I can count on the fingers of one hand the working composers in todays film who are anywhere near capable of composing something as good as this.

Maybe they ARE capable, they just don't know it yet.

Nah, you're right, the true legends have come and gone I'm afraid. Still a couple of them alive though.

    Howl - Carter Burwell

Dark, slow and heavy, but mesmerising, especially if you're a fan of his low-key ensemble scores of the past. 'Prophecy' which gets a bit wild in the second half is a standout cue, whilst the tender 'My Mother' is another highlight.

that is very unfair. The whole industry has changed towards team work deadlines and making money. It involves so many people in so many fields of specialisation that don't allow to one person alone to do it all on themselves and be divas. To suggest that legends do not exist is very unfair in my opinion. They exist but change forms according to the environment and eras , the society and its needs . Clint mansell desplat zimmer giacchino etc are all legends for the youngsters whether some like it or not.

Someone needs to define what a legend is!

To me there's a time element to becoming a legend. And most composers today need to have amassed a few more years of consistently high composing before people will look back and call them a legend.

Being talented isn't the same as being a legend.

By this point there's definitely a bit of a time element with Zimmer at least.

influential is more important than time these days. Why do you think in past times terms ? Society is fast food and violent and doesn't allow for legends in the traditional meanning as you describe it above. In not making those equal to the old time legends as most people define them. It is something completely different and new. Read my previous post .

One out of two isn't bad then! wink

Zimmer is certainly talented but I still would not say he has reached legend status. Popular...yes. Prolific...yes. But to take the next step and be called a legend? It's that intangible quality that I'm not sure is easily quantifiable - hence the intangible bit.

  4. For me they are legends, that's what counts. And the young uns can have theirs when they grow older.

I did read your post before I commented. And I read it again after your recommendation. But I'm not sure I need to read it again.

Knowing someone doesn't make them a legend. They are popular.

Yes, maybe the definition of what a legend is may change over time but I personally think that the label of legend may be lessened if it just means popular and prolific.

By the way, you don't need to shout.

I can't speak for Greece but here in England the names Barry, Morricone, Williams will still trip off the tongue easier than those you mentioned.

Of more "modern" composers Elfman is well known but I would say Zimmer and Horner to a lesser extent.

It really is BLISS, this score is a masterpiece. Great themes, excellent use of female voice, the solo violin and the piano, very moving and emotional. It's in my top 10 of all time without a doubt. Like you said there is no dull moment, I love every note. I wonder if Jan A.P. Kaczmarek will compose another score like this.

i meant 18-25 year olds. In any case though and since you are talking about time it is very unfair to say about the young composers that they do not have it anymore nor they can't write " like they did in the past " while you do know that the industry is very different for them these days. And the music changes , the demands from them change too.
