The Tamarind Seed - John Barry

Crappy-sounding bootleg, sadly. How there can be no official release of this (given how great it is) is beyond me. What a main theme.

It supposed to be "in the works" by an un-named label.

Heard an opera on the radio this morning (no singing, thankfully) by Bejamin Britten called "Peter Grimes".

Unbelivable -- Horner plagarises everything, doesn't he? That terrific ascending three/four note motif in a cue of "The Journey of Natty Gann" that has the soft woodwind (maybe a high key flute?) ... not only ripped off here, but he lifted the orchestrations, too!

The opera was kind of long, and in sections. It was disheartening to then here in the final section (as I recall) Goldsmith also lift from Britten. As I recall, it was a theme from "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier", more specifically one from the "A Busy Man" cue. Unlike Horner, he attempted to vary and appropriately alter the orchestrations.

Justin, I'm presuming you mean the piece 'Dawn' from Peter Grimes, it's part of the Four Sea Interludes.

    'DAWN'

It's an exquisitely beautiful yet very foreboding piece.

ALEXANDER DESPLAT - harry potter and the deathly hallows

Splendid. Its calmer, more melodic parts sound like an extension to his Twilight material which is always a good thing.

I get the feeling that you and I are the only unqualified Desplat fans here...
  5. Michael Clayton - James Newton Howard

I found this better than what the critics said about it. The End Titles are especially moving.

Gentlemen! What is this false posturing? None of you top me as a Desplat fan, and that is the simple truth of it. wave

And that said composer in in support of a director who sexually assaulted two young kids and fled the U.S. to avoid prison time?

  9. You might have taken that a bit seriously Scribe, but even so, I think even Desplat would agree that his greatest fan is not the one that most wildly overpraises him. wink

I think there's a case for Justin being his greatest fan, on the basis of the above. smile

  11. At what point does your fandom cease to exist? If that guy had KILLED the kids instead, and Desplat still supported him? How about if it was someone you knew?

My case is in a far better position...

I don't know why I'm succumbing to the temptation to get involved in this but...anyone who understands how these situations work knows that its completely pointless to judge an "accused individual" unless one is actually involved in the situation. Claiming child abuse is one of the cheapest tactics imaginable for defaming someone's reputation. I have absolutely no idea whether this particular accused individual actually did anything wrong. And given that we're not even talking about Desplat himself, but simply a "person he supports", then no, it has absolutely no effect on my opinion of Desplat.

I don't care for an ultimate_desplat_fan position; it's just that apart his saccharine QUEEN and tamara whatever score (there must be another 2-3 in this list, possibly smaller french scores i'd imagine, that i played once and never again), i find his music absolutely beautiful.

  12. Well, Desplat had no doubts and he is a father as well. So lay it off.

Polanski is guilty of statutory rape, having sex with a 13-year-old girl who he was giving a photoshoot of. There are some disturbing details that leaked out of her conversations with the prosecutor. Recently though she was a witness against getting him back ot the US and she vocally supports allowing him back to the US without a prosecution.

Now about the whole ordeal, the truth is that Polanski had a deal with the prosecutor (or the judge) about the case. He'll spend some time in jail before the trial and this will account to his guilt after pleading guilty in the case. (I don't know the subtleties of American law, maybe it was about pleading no contest). He fled the US because he was scared that the prosecutor/judge (who got obsessed with the case in the process) would not fulfill his part of the deal.

Polanski did admit to the statutory rape.

Hint to Pawel: If you take it seriously, it keeps coming back with indignation. Laugh it off, ignore it, agree with it -- all these are better than arguing on the basis of the facts with someone who wants anyone innocent who supports a convicted criminal to be tarred with some kind of moral brush.
