I have finished listening to Max Richter's recomposed Vivaldi's four seasons.
I can only say I listened to it three consecutive times and I have a new favourite cd for the moment.
For me it works great.
It uses elements of the Four Seasons (Duh) but in such a way that it becomes a completely different piece.
But on the other hand it sets the mood for you to listen to the original four seasons again and listen to that piece with more interest as well.
For me this album is a big win...
I'm in love, and I won't hide it
.
Goddamnit my vinyl was pushed back by amazon to october, thanks to "delays in the release date of the article".Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

NP: BIONIC ORCHESTRA (Francis Rimbert)
This is Rimbert's first solo album from 1979, but he's probably more famous as Jean Michel Jarre's regular keyboard player on the big stageshows. What I would love to get my hands on, though, is the library music he composed in the 70's and 80's (the April Orchestra/Music sessions), but they're extremely obscure. But oh, so catchy!I am extremely serious. -

NP: The 2nd Law - Muse
The whole album is a revelation, with many standout tracks. You can hear the various stylistic influences of the 80s, 90s pop, rock and electronica, subverted and heavily bleeding into various current trends. The first track, Supremacy is an epic song, sweetened with the legacy of Led Zeppelin' Kashmir and Bond, James Bond. I could see this being an ultra aggressive 007 song, with all of the musical hooks being re-purposable as action licks. The bass line is excellent here. The third track, Panic Station, rules, with brass line over dominating slap bass work. Rocking tunes all around. The penultimate track is a crazy amalgamation of Zimmer-esque ostinato/low string melody/brass line idiom crossed with dubstep and heavy rock. Makes me want to go and smash something. The ending track is almost calming, in comparison, pairing a hypnotic piano and guitar with synthesizer and strings over a heavy bass beat. -

I'll be amazed one day when a musician cites Jerry Goldsmith as a major influence to his album. -

Nothing like a little Rimsky-Korsakov on a Sunday morning. I'm listening to his symphonic poem or symphony called Antar.

NP : VEILE PRIERE BOUDDHIQUE - Lili Boulanger
Incredibly moving and beautiful work from a young genius who was cut down at the age of 24, it's impossible to know where her music would have gone had she led a full and healthy life. I only discovered this extraordinary French composer this year but I am totally smitten with her music. On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

NP : OEUVRES POUR CHOEUR & ORCHESTRE - Lili Boulanger
I'm finding it very difficult to eject this CD. Loving the orchestrations which at times remind me of Hugo Friedhofer and Jerome Moross, her sister Nadia who lived to a good old age and was a great composer in her own right ( Lili died tragically young at 24 ) worked with (tutored?) some film composers amongst whom was Elmer Bernstein ( I'll have to look this up ).On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

Isn't that a film score?
Technically yes but as a listening experience is concerned it more symphonic in nature at least to me. Nic Raine conducts the City of Prague Philharmonic. That being said it will be included in my list for 1922. I can't recommended this highly enough. I've included an audio clip in the review I'm working on. http://sdtom.wordpress.com/2010/03/17/nosferatubernard/

After the exceptional Boulanger works I need yet more cerebral stimulation, there's something about Rautavaara, like Vaughan Williams, that hits me on a deep emotional level in a way that I don't have the words to explain. On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

It doesn't surprise me, I look forward to seeing/hearing how he uses the piece.

On The Last Frontier is one of my favourite works, a large very dark orchestral choral piece I think is magnificent ( Martijn hated it ), Symphony # 8 which is mentioned earlier, I'm afraid I can't remember other titles as they're all packed away ready for moving. On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -
