Sometimes I have an absolute CRAVING for classical music.
The last week has been sucha period. I absolutely GORGED myself on Dvorak, Handel, Bach, Vivaldi, Smetana and more.
The combination of visceral as well as heady highs is quite the rush.

I'm cheating and actually sight-reading through Beethoven piano sonatas today. I suppose I could record myself playing them and THEN listen to them but that's not nearly as much fun (and somewhat more torturous).
  4. I could record myself playing "Old McDonald had a Farm". O, well ...

I'm going to listen to all 9 of his symphonies in historical order these days.

Btw: Who else is anticipating the upcoming album by Mike Oldfield: On the Rocks? I certainly am. I'll go for the special edition with the instumental versions on disc 2. Timmer? Thor? Anyone?

Timmer is a much bigger Oldfield fan than I, so if I have any interest it would only be to judge his evolution as a composer. My appreciation of him is hit and miss.
    I am extremely serious.

I'm also hit and miss on his post 80's stuff, some great, some not so. But I'm always interested in a new Oldfield release.

    NP : SIMPLE THINGS - Zero 7

If I did a thread of My Top 50 All Time Favourite Albums Ever From All and Every Type of Music then this album would be in that top 50.

p.s. All the Zero 7 albums are available on Spotify.

As am I, although his most recent stuff (with the exception of the Karl Jenkins influenced Music of the Spheres) leaves me cold.

Samples of all tracks of Man On The Rocks are available at http://www.bol.com/nl/p/man-on-the-rock … 024265595/
  9. Light & Shade were a disapointment for me. Spheres I love. They say that with On the Rocks Oldfield returns to rock&pop songs. This kindles my hope.

  10. NP: Also sprach Zarathustra / Thus spoke Zoroaster - Richard Strauss
Berlin Philharmonics / Gustavo Dudamel. 2013. On Deutsche Grammophon

Recorded live at the Philharmonie Berlin.

I saw Dudamel conducting a few times on TV. He's a very interesting conductor of the younger generation. This recording is stellar! Also including: Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche and Don Juan.

I'm becoming more and more interested in Prokofiev. Just heard the Minnesota orchestra perform his 4th the 1947 revised version. Interesting story on his Classical symphony which is such a treat as he goes back to Haydn and Mozart and then blends in his own style.

Right now I'm listening to Hindemith's symphonic metamorphosis of themes of Carl von Weber.

  14. NP: Man on the Rocks (2014) - Mike Oldfield

Well, this is neither Oldfield's weakest nor is it his strongest effort. The first half of these 11 new songs seem like Oldfield on auto pilot whereas the second half is distinctly stronger. The vocals by Luke Spiller are adequate but not spectacular.
The second disc of the special edition features the instrumental versions of the songs. This seems to be a bit unimaginative and is nothing one must nescessarily own. A serenade of thematic variations would have appealed more to me.
This new Oldfield is nice for playing in the background for it does not command too much of your attention.
