If you like Richard Robbins-like scores, you'll probably go for this. I do.

I love the music in the show but have held off buying the CD purely because in the show most cues seem to be very short, so I wasn't sure if the album would work. But if you like it, I'm sure I will.

As for the second series... I'm not sure it really is quite as good as the first. Much more soap opera-ish. I still like it, but if the second series had been the first then I'm not sure I'd have stuck around. (And last Sunday Lady Mary said "It's not that I'm shocked... I'm just stunned." Julian Fellowes, shame on you.)

Sounds like a whipper snapper or two might have taken up the morning shift on the writing team.

BUT: Youtube can make such magnificence known to the oblivious and ignorant. It really is the most helpful tool around in pointing out stuff people might be interested in.

I've only heard the first (E.T. and me) and it is lovely.

  3. NP: I Am Legend (Complete Score) - James Newton Howard

Nice to hear the film versions of My Name Is Robert Neville, Sam's Gone and The Jagged Edge. Same thing with the Main Titles, Suicide Run (the night scene in the pier) and the music for the theatrical ending. Also, the choral cues have a little bit more volume. Sad that most of it was cut of the film.

    NP: THIEF (Tangerine Dream)

Very minimalistic, but excellent score! This is an expanded boot, however, so it's really too much. Wish there were a better album program.

Well, despite the rare drop in the quality of dialog (for a moment), the thing that stood out to me in this past episode is how beautiful and moving the scoring was. I confess, I got a bit teary! And good scoring contributed to emotional power of the scenes contained here. John Lunn has done a superb job with this project!

NP: Wolfen/Deadly Blessing - James Horner

I have had this for some time and wasn't that impressed after I first spun it - but I watched Wolfen the other night on Netflix streaming and while I wasn't that impressed with the film, the score really stood out and I am really enjoying it right now (the Wolfen part, haven't got to the Deadly Blessing stuff yet)

    yeah

For instance you are missing out on THIS brilliant piece of concert music.

The alternate of "Abandoned and Pursued"

The concert version of E.T.'s Halloween

The concert arrangement of Over The Moon

And the film version (I think) of Adventures on Earth

None of that is available on the expanded editions!

You really want to convince me huh? smile

I'll check those out, see (hear) what I've been missing.

I checked out the original album for the first time today, and this is by far superior to the anniversary edition which I found difficult to get through. Give me anything with the government agents theme in though. cool

Wolfen is okay, early Horner sound that doesn't quite show his craft, but is far from being hideous as well. I never heard the other one, because I'm expecting it to be quite awful. Or am I wrong?

Admittedly I would recommend that version of ET to regular normal people (that is, people who aren't into film music). It's a superb album with some excellent versions of pieces from the score. I often play individual tracks from the 1996 album if I just want instant ET music, so I completely understand why people generally prefer that album.

But I'm such a big fan of the score itself, I tend to prefer the "experience" of the anniversary edition. Like Close Encounters and indeed Jaws, it's a score I'm willing to listen to every note off since it makes the pay off even greater. Funnily enough though, I prefer the Anthology Star Wars albums over the complete scores... dizzy

Also, I've never been sure about this: Is the anniversary edition a rerecording? Or is it the original score? In fact, what are all the CD versions of ET ever released?? (I'd look at my CD, but it's probably under a couple thousand boxes in the loft.)
  5. STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT - JERRY GOLDSMITH

An entry worthy of Trek's musical legacy. Jerry's done good, bless him. cool

I can give you a list with all the members of the London Symphony Orchestra since its inception?

NP: KAMEO - ELEMENTS OF POWER (Steve Burke)

I have absolutely no connection to this videogame from the early 2000's, nor its composer, but the score is a nice orchestral adventure pastiche with some lovely melodies wearing their hearts on their sleeve. Not terribly original, but fine listening.
    I am extremely serious.
  6. It is a great listen. And there are additional tracks available online - his website/game website.

NP: CAPTAIN CORELLI'S MANDOLIN (Stephen Warbeck)

Very fluffy, easy-going romance score. A bit TOO fluffy at times. And I could be without the folksy Italian source songs. I'll be giving this CD to Jonathan in Ghent, actually.

  7. It is a bit too fluffy, that one. His PROOF and CHARLOTTE GRAY both have always felt a bit stronger to me, although there's a nice theme or two in there.

I have the 1988 CD release, I didn't even know there was a 1996 release? is it a straight release of the original album? Extra tracks? Remastered? I just had a look at the 2002 anniversary edition, it has an interview with JW and not much else.

I'm a massive fan of this score ( easily in my top 10 film scores and albums of all time ) and I honestly don't know much about these recordings.

The movie's quite good, the music fits it perfectly in a naive, romantic way.

Not great all the way through, but the track The moon and the superhero makes up for it.

NP: Humanoids from the Deep - James Horner

This is the Battle Beyond the Stars/Humanoids combo. I wanted to give this a listen to see if I would be tempted to purchase Buysoundtrax just announced new version. The jury is still out, though I am enjoying listening to early Horner (following up on my Wolfen spin yesterday).
