It's a way more fun score than Indy IV in my opinion, even if all the action music might be overkill for some, for me, action junkie that I am it simply isn't.

It's nice that you like it, but I find it hard to understand how people can enjoy this kind of action music. Seems too erratic and void of themes to me. I like Indy IV much more, since it introduced some new themes, even though they aren't all that.

Why is it hard to understand people can enjoy this kind of action music? It's thematic, well orchestrated and rocks big solid balls, just like the meatier stuff from the trilogy. If I had to choose between this and modern action film scoring (as in 'Battleshit' for instance), I don't have to think long.

And Crystal Skull is just way too boring in the end, it's not an Indy score and film.

It IS an Indy score, just not up there with the other three, having said that I still enjoy it and it has it's moments, I like the skull theme too.

It's a taste issue. The same way that I don't understand how people can enjoy feta cheese, since I don't enjoy it. If a particular food item makes me vomit, it's impossible for me to understand what happens in the mind of other people when they enjoy it. Likewise, I find this music to be erratic, non-thematic (probably because none of the themes stick) and head-ache inducing. If you like it, good for you.

Well okay then... to each his own.

About Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb when I said it's thematic in the action cues, that's not true, not in the way Williams has done on the trilogy, because not many people can match that level of complexity, but the action music is based on certain melodic hooks that I dig and is driven by a certain kind of rhythm that I like and so that makes its overall structure make sense, even if I don't. dizzy

You can't deny this particular track isn't attempting to be in the style of Williams' music, and every bit of rollicking good fun for some, and head-ache inducing for others.

    Nothing wrong with Celtic. cool
I liked the samples and am looking forward to the CD.

NP: my own Western playlist (currently 167 tracks)

So many gems in there, and so fitting this sweltering heat. Outstanding tracks like High Plains Drifter, The Big Gundown' Django and The Brotherhood Of The Gun make this my most powerful and emotive playlist, with the greatest rotation.

No I can't but I don't see your point? I already said it's not as good as the first three.

Why is it hard to understand people can enjoy this kind of dramatic music? It's thematic, well orchestrated and rocks big solid balls, just like the mystical stuff from the trilogy. Interestingly, the 2-note alien motif (heard most repetitively in "The Aliens", oddly enough) seems to me to have the same cadence and pattern as a cat meow.

    The Chase - John Barry

It's amazing how creative / varied he was in his earlier days, considering his later reputation for predictability. This groovy jazz score is full of bustle and energy. "The Chase is On" is one of his best pieces.
  8. KING KONG - JAMES NEWTON HOWARD

Can you believe there was a time I couldn't enjoy this? At least not in the same way as right now. Bizarre how some scores just open up once you've found the moment you can accept them for what they are, and even more bizarre it took me as long as 7 years. shame

Anyway it's a very good score, it just doesn't beat Waterworld in the awesome department.

Why you want to hear ANYTHING from that wretched score, when you can listen to my version of Hook is simply beyond me... rolleyes

  12. THE BLACK CAULDRON - ELMER BERNSTEIN

A little hard to like, what with all the musical styles rapidly changing to suit the needs of an animation film. Some hints of Ghostbusters, but nothing that has the thematic greatness of that one. Might be worth to revisit it to get a better feel of the themes, if only it wasn't such a long release, and slightly crazy at times.

The Black Cauldron is a score that is finely crafted to fit the film's movements perfectly. Just watched it.
As a full album it's a tough one to consume comfortably.
The original Varese LP (and CD) was only 32 minutes long making me always think I was missing great music.
There were a few good moments that were left off but to have the whole thing now, well, I dunno.
It would make a better 42 minute album at best. Not 75 minutes.
I need to hear it more though. I might end up changing my mind.

I have never heard the music, and never saw the film, so I have no earlier connection.

But it was the same for me with Slipstream, now that is much more 'slipstreamed' release at a perfect length.
