    As I said, I wasn't really expecting anything (well, that's a lie... this is precisely what I was expecting if I'm honest). But it isn't about whether I was expecting something different or not; it's about what I'm actually hearing. Lincoln is, at least for the moment, a score that doesn't move me or interest me above the fact that it's a new John Williams score. I was slightly bored of the Americana in Amistad (not including its wonderful Africana main theme), and I'm even more bored of it here.

    I'm not inherently against patriotic music, especially since Independence Day is perhaps my favourite score of all time - but the reverent 'play it safe' nature of this score just doesn't impress me (save for the obvious technical skill that goes into creating any score like this).

  4. I was checking out samples from various known and unknown film scores at SAE. "Cloud Atlas"? Pass. The only one that got my attention, that I was unfamiliar with was:

    I don't know, whilst i completely agree with you and many others who don't feel LINCOLN is anything special (heck i don't think it's special either), still that old-school film music americana with its grandness and at parts - naivety, made me feel sentiments that were long lost in the confused and noisy world of modern film music filled with electronics and other similar noisy trends; maybe it's part of why i love Horner. But of course Lincoln - as Erik said before, is far more better written and makes much more sense musically than when Horner is on recycle mode wink

    I've ordered LINCOLN from Amazon and it will be arriving soon, hopefully. I couldn't help myself, however, and sneak-listened to it at Spotify. I certainly LOVED what I heard (not so much the source cue-like period music, but the softspoken Americana), but a more legitimate opinion will be formed once I've received the CD and listened to it.
    I am extremely serious.

Pushed to choose between this and Legends of the Fall I pick Legends quite easily, the basic reason though being the fact that except the Celtic elements (for Horner's own good I'll refrain from calling them Scotish and also to save myself from Alan's wrath biggrin wink ), this is basically the same sound and Legends were a year earlier smile

    I can't agree with you that it is boring. Far from it. It's a score that needs and begs for your undivided attention. The intricacies of the orchestration, variations on themes, counterpoint, the recording, etc. It's a master at work and again he does a brilliant job! Stunning, stunning music.

    And of course Tintin is going to be more varied. It's a friggin' action adventure film for crying out loud. You can't go into Lincoln expecting a 7 music action set piece.

    Minus the choral piece and the march, it's a really enjoyable fore/background listening experience. Much more involving than his SPR score, and less "sad" per se.

    Given the way the film has been described from the trailer, it sounds like Williams pretty much matched the film perfectly.
