I'm in kind of a film noir mood today.
First I listened to the outstanding THE BLACK DAHLIA by Mark Isham. Incredible score and a great recording as well. I have to return to this one more often.
I just finished with John Barry's BODY HEAT; the re-recording featuring Jole McNeely and the London Symphony Orchestra. I have both the SCSE and FSM versions and I still prefer the re-recording. It's mostly a sound quality thing. The LSO recording I think is superb!
I'm now going to spin an interesting compilation from BSX Records called FILM NOIR'S FINEST. You can find the album HERE! A surprisingly solid album!

Listening to it on these (plus a pretty decent FiiO headphone amp). I don't usually smuggle in audiophilia quite so blatantly to the forum as this (usually), but it has to said that this score and its recording shines on these headphones. I genuinely feel sorry for people who never get to experience music like this! (For example, my flatmate plays her music through her laptop speakers all the time, and I'm tempted to at least buy her a decent pair of headphones or speakers... when I have monies to spare. I suppose it's what a Christian must feel like when they see people without Jesus in their lives. Music is, after all, my religion!) -

Martijn recommended I find the Captain From Castile Symphonic Suite on Facet/Delos Records. While I do love SAE's complete release this 43 minute suite of highlights from the score is just as brilliant!

I've been listening to the FSM release of Body Heat a lot recently. What a fantastic score. There's something very odd about the recording, though. I was expecting it to be a world apart from the SCSE based on the PR stuff and euphoria that greeted its release, but really, it isn't. I suspect the McNeely recording will be the one I return to in future years. -

It's probably my one remaining "holy grail" - one of the truly great film scores. I asked the one person who would definitely know about its release and he did not give the impression that it's imminent. -

It's an odd one, so unlike everything else in Isham's career. It's interesting - perhaps I'm getting my dates slightly off, but wasn't it the first score he had ever done that wasn't orchestrated by Ken Kugler? And it was the first one that sounded absolutely nothing like any of his others (and indeed the stuff he's written since - also without Kugler - has also been different, but equally nothing like Black Dahlia). -

NP: Star Wars - John Williams
iTunes shuffling has thrown up the anthology version of this iconic score, so I am listening to the original album tracks (with their original edits and track titles) plus some of the extra tracks to be found on the 4th disc.

Just the suite but it's really all I need. I think this is some of the finest music Jerry ever composed. Just magnificent. -

Far Cry 3 is not for everyone though, heavy harsh electronics, jarring soundscape, but very, very coherent and original.

Coming over the Atlantic this morning arrived what I consider to be my last Holy Grail: "King of Kings" by Miklos Rozsa. (2002 2CD set, Sony)! At long last I was able to lay my hands on a used copy in prime condition for a reasonable price (I think, 45 € b.th.w.)

It's blaring from my speakers now and my neighbours must think I have finally gone crazy! 
What else do I seek now? "Earth Star Voyager" by Lalo Schifrin. Nice, but not exactely a Holy Grail. JNH's "Redemption" cue from "Flatliners"...

Superb score. Great songs (which I've added from the original release to the deluxe edition in iTunes.) "Star of Bethlehem (Instrumental)" is an underrated gem!
